Bathrooms that feel zen and will help you disconnect
By RUTH BASHINSKY
With life always moving at
lightning speed, the bathroom
should be the one place in the
home to disconnect and just “be.”
Whether it is for alone time or
couple time, designers are seeing
greater interest in the bathroom
as a priority and space that
homeowners want to invest in.
“Bathroom time is important,”
Black and bold among latest design trends
says designer Keith Baltimore of
Port Washington-based Baltimore
Design Group. “It is alone time for
yourself or alone time for a couple.
Their private space, especially with
a house full of kids. A place that is
romantic and also a place to go and
have a conversation while getting
dressed for dinner or an event.”
Some design details that are
being recognized in 2018 include
wallpaper, brass and gold, exotic
stone, great art, accent lighting, and
comfortable seating featuring walls
with either the organic impact of a
marble slab or something dramatic
like a black marble with gold water
jet details.
“Thoughtful design in the
bathroom has become a priority for
my clients,” says Huntington-based
designer Kim Radovich of Kim
Radovich Interiors. “This high-tech
fast-paced life we live in with so
much technology and the pressures
of life and so many distractions
makes it even more essential to
create living spaces that offer a
respite from reality.”
Radovich offers some inspiring
words to help inspire and get
started: “Think of the most
glamorous hotel room bath and
start with that as your inspiration.”
INSIDE JOB
“Don’t be afraid to be
bold with wall color. I love
black in the bathroom. It is such
a grounding color that is classic and
works well with every color. The black
wall covering is textured black vinyl
and is a powerful juxtaposition in the
room. There are also elements of
black in the tiles and the window
treatments and flooring.”
“I placed a black
sheepskin hide on the
floor. It had an organic
shape and worked nicely
with the shape of the
room.”
“Whenever I am
designing a bathroom
the tub is always the focal
point of the room. Who
doesn’t love a large tub to
soak in?”
“Brass is
back and works
beautifully, but polished
nickel is very hot right
now too and is always
classic when used for
the hardware.”
“Accessorize
with scented
candles, plush towels,
and robes. I filled glass
vessels with soaps, cotton
balls, and shells to give it
an intimate spa-like
feel.”
“I always like to
place a seat in a large
bathroom and outfit it with
reading material. For this
space, I used a ceramic stool
that had an indoor/outdoor
cushion.”
“To add visual
interest, I placed
a black mobile
strategically on the
vast white ceiling.”
PRESS HOME
“There should always be
art in the bathroom. The art I
chose was thoughtfully curated for
the space. The two designs are from
Long Island artist Dean Johnson, who
creates Resin Relief Wall Art that stands
up well to the moisture and humidity
in the bathroom. When selecting art,
a glass-enclosed picture can be
considered, but certainly not a
fine canvas.”
Kim Radovich of Kim Radovich Interiors
designed this luxurious bathroom for the
Hampton Showhouse as an ideal place to
unplug. Radovich incorporated bold colors
and great art with an oversized tub that
brings the bathroom to life.
