What Goes on Under the Hood?
Have you ever wondered what
goes on under the hood of your car?
Whether you just want to be able to
change your oil or you’re seriously
looking for a future in auto mechanics,
the Nassau BOCES Adult Career
& Technical Education (CTE)
Program can put you on your way to
understand more about your vehicle,
or set you on a career path.
Adult learners come to the Joseph
M. Barry Career & Technical
Education Center in Westbury to
get hands-on training in the field
of automotive technology at their
evening classes. The courses offer
step-by-step hands-on training
from basic vehicle maintenance to
steering, brakes, electrical systems,
engine performance and alternative
fuels technology. “We equip
students with the skills, knowledge,
and expertise required to become a
successful Automotive Technician.
Our instructors are the best in the
business, and very knowledgeable,”
says the program’s Assistant Principal
Jamel Johnson.
“The industry needs well-trained
mechanics. I find the best me -
chanics come from a combination
of formal education and work
experience.” says Edward Stella
who has been teaching at the program
for almost 10 years. There
is plenty of demand out there,
dealerships, municipalities, UPS,
they all have fleets of vehicles and
someone needs to fix and maintain
them. They come to us looking for
mechanics, because they know we
prepare them well.”
Student Kenneth Redoble, of
Long Beach, says, “I want to go into
this as a profession, and the teachers
here are great – they explain everything
in detail.”
Instructor Domenic Settimo,
says there is a mix of interest in
his classes. “Some want to just
learn how to take care of their cars,
others are testing the waters to see
if this is what they want to do as a
profession.”
Dave Fulton,
an instructor
for nearly 10
years, says
he’s seen a mix
of genders and
interests.
“About 70%
of the students
are looking
for a job in the
field.”
Student Loretta DeDomenic is
looking for knowledge, she says,
“I can go into a shop and discuss
what’s wrong with my car. It’s not
a bad thing for women to get to
know their cars and understand
how they work.”
Johnson concludes, “If you love
cars, like to fix vehicles, or would
want to start your career as an Auto
Mechanic, our Automotive Technology
program is the place to be.”
