ACTS OF KINDNESS SPIRIT OF GIVING By JOAN MACNAUGHTON
"Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve" is
the phrase at the entrance of many Lasallian
schools throughout the world,
and it is a core principle learned at
The De La Salle School in Freeport.
The entire student body gave great
witness to this philosophy during the
advent season to a fellow Lasallian
school, College Saint Jean Baptiste
de La Salle School in Port-au-Prince,
Haiti. This school was severely affected
by natural disasters and is in
extreme poverty. Wanting to help,
Freeport’s De La Salle School students
began their project by raising money
during morning assemblies each day
of the advent season by placing their
pocket change in a honey jar they
nicknamed "Louie."
Additionally, they organized a
recycling program and collected

bottles and cans from the recycling
bins in each classroom. They
earned 5 cents for each bottle or
can turned in to add to their advent
collection. This money was then
added to the proceeds from the
raffle sales they held at the school's
Family Hot Cocoa and Book Night
before Christmas. The total raised
was $988.35.
All monies raised were sent and
donated as a gift to benefit the College
Saint Jean Jean Baptiste de La Salle
School in Haiti. The boys of The De La
Salle School received a beautiful gift
in return, the gift of the true spirit of
Christmas: the gift of giving to those
in need.
