Hey, readers!
It’s December and the holiday season is in full swing!
As you wrap presents, spend time with family and get ready for the
new year ahead, take a few minutes to read up on the latest stories
coming out of western Queens.
Recently, Long Island City Partnership launched LIC Local, a way-faring
tool that uses QR Codes to get around the neighborhood. Entro
and Boyce technologies teamed up to create 100 “smart signs” that
can be scanned and used to orient pedestrians using exact geographic
coordinates. Learn more about that new technology on page 12.
In our real estate section this month, we check out the end-of-the-year
report from Property Club, which named four Queens properties
on a list of the 20 best-selling residential buildings in New York City.
One of those properties is GALERIE, located at 22-18 Jackson Ave.
See how it ranked on Property Club’s list.
In Sunnyside, groups of community activists, including Justice
for All Coalition, Stop Sunnyside Yards, Woodside on the Move
and Take Back NYC, rallied against the Sunnyside Yards project.
They demanded that the EDC and other involved agencies stop the
development immediately. Also in our community news section, we
profiled Giselle Burgess, the founder of Girl Scout Troop 6000 who is
running for City Council in 2021. Burgess is running for Councilman
Jimmy Van Bramer’s seat when he has reached his term limit. Read
these stories and more starting on page 22.
In features this month, we head to Joe Coffee Company’s new
Long Island City location. Founded in 2003, the New York-based
company unveiled new branding as well as their first-ever standalone
roastery in LIC. Also in LIC, we talk to two local musicians, Pat Irwin
and J. Walter Hawkes about their new album “Wide Open Sky.” The
collaborative album was inspired by their beloved neighborhood and
pays homage to its changing landscape. “The name of the record,
‘Wide Open Sky,’ is a direct acknowledgement of what the sky used
to look like in Long Island City,” Hawkes said.
We take a quick trip out to Citi Field where the Hello Panda Festival
is happening from now until January 26. Check out all the lanterns,
food and activities this event has to offer in our around Queens section.
Our art and events calendars on page 52 and 54 are always a
good source to find fun things to see and do in your neighborhoods.
As always, you can email me at jbagcal@schnepsmedia.com if you
have any tips stories or anything else you’d like to share.
Thank you for being such loyal readers of our magazine. We
appreciate you all. Enjoy your holidays and see you in 2020!
