“The Sculpture of Gonzalo Fonseca”
On view through March 11
The Noguchi Museum presents a retrospective exhibition
of the sculptural work of Gonzalo Fonseca (1922–97),
a major figure in the development of modern Latin
American art who created some of the most enchanting
sculptures of his day. The exhibition encompasses some
80 objects, primarily works in stone from the mid-1960s
to the 1990s, complemented by selected drawings and
sketchbooks.

“Bruce Nauman: Disappearing Acts”
On view through March 17
Spanning the artist’s entire career, from the mid-1960s to the
present, “Disappearing Acts” provides a singular opportunity
to experience his command of a wide range of mediums,
from drawing, printmaking, photography, and sculpture to
performance, film, neon, and large-scale installations.
“Disappearing Acts” traces strategies of withdrawal in
Nauman’s work—both literal and figurative incidents of
removal, deflection, and concealment. Bodies are fragmented,
centers are left empty, voices emanate from hidden speakers;
the artist sculpts himself in absentia, appearing only as
negative space.

“36 bars”
On view through Dec. 17
In the 1980s, Los Angeles photographer John Divola began
collecting photographs that were made during Hollywood
productions and later discarded. The 36 photographs on exhibit
were found in a small poster shop behind a flower store on
Sunset Boulevard. They had been retrieved from a dumpster by
a long-time Warner Bros. employee. These incredibly detailed
images, dating from circa 1928–1933 and made with 8x10
cameras, were made solely to provide records of movie sets for
continuity during production. As found objects, their aesthetic
beauty challenges the distinction between fine art photography
and the craftsmanship of Hollywood technicians.
