Celebrate fall The leaves are changing colors and along with pumpkin fl avored treats, October brings so many fun things to do in Long Island City, Astoria and Sunnyside. To start things off, this month marks the end of the successful LIC Flea & Food, which has seen amazing surprises since it began in June. LIC Flea has created fun weekends fi lled with a variety of foods, arts, activities and music for the whole family. Last month three of our LIC Flea vendors swept the 9th Annual NYC Vendy Awards in Brooklyn. We have held a Charming Child Contest, and have given families the opportunity to stop by and pick their very own pumpkins straight from the farm. LIC Flea is open every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the corner of 46th Avenue and 5th Street in Long Island City until October 27 and will back next April. There are still a lot more surprises coming to LIC Flea, so don’t forget to make it your next weekend destination and come try these award-winning vendors. The spooky yet charming face on our front cover belongs to one of the many kids who came out for the LIC Courier’s Halloween photo shoot where each got dressed up, their faces painted by artist Jhowee Chiang and photographed by Orestes Gonzalez. In this issue, we sat down once again with renowned photographer Tony Vaccaro, who is returning to Normandy to be honored in some of the towns he helped liberate during D-Day. You’ll also get a fi rst look into the luxurious expansion of one of Long Island City’s hotels which will be adding a brand new 10-story building featuring a catering hall, more guest rooms, outdoor spaces and landscaped gardens. We also celebrated the life of Rory Staunton, a young Sunnyside resident who lost his life to complications from sepsis, yet who leaves a lasting impression on both his community and the neighboring Jackson Heights community as well. After that, take a look at the brand-new Sunnyside map that made its debut earlier this month and meet some local businesses and organizations giving back. Also read about a newly created coalition bringing together local venues and bands to save a beloved landmarked home in Astoria. We always welcome your feedback, ideas and want to hear from you. The fall season is still young, so bundle up and go exploring, take a trip down to LIC Flea on the weekend and start getting ready for the holidays.
