sports website Bleacher Report as its lead NFL analyst. His love of the game and his obvious love for the Green Bay Packers have secured his role in football analysis and football commentary. Although his love of the game is highly infectious, he is critical of some aspects of the sport. “Recently the NFL has been a public relations disaster with some of these crimes and misdemeanors,” he said. There are other aspects of the game that trouble him greatly: “I think it’s true to say that a lot of the spontaneous joy has gone out of the game. The NFL rules are being implemented to the letter. It is ridiculous to take five minutes to check the validity of a catch, holding up an entire game,” he said. Worse than this is the lack of celebration that is allowed after a score. “The NFL has stopped any spontaneous expression of excitement which, after a monumental psychological, strategic and physical attack certainly warrants celebrating,” he said. “You only have to look at the recent World Cup to see how the games are enhanced by the joy of the players.” However, these elements are insufficient to dent Nagler’s entrenched love of the game and in particular, his growing involvement with the Green Bay Packers. The Packers lost against the Seahawks in the season opener and Nagler admits that the house was a little uncomfortable because of the disappointment in the air. “The Packers were really outplayed by the Seahawks,” he said. But he recognized that it’s only one game in what will be a long season, and there will be plenty of victories for him to celebrate. “I feel a little sorry for those people who do not have a real passion for a team,” he said. “In this sense I am extremely fortunate, not least in the fact that my wife and daughters put up with my moods of exaltation in victory and hopefully magnanimity in defeat.” Photo by Troy Benson
