■SUNNYSIDE SHINES Unique bites at the Taste of Sunnyside Sunnyside is one of the most diverse communities in New York City, and local restaurants showcase delicious food from across the globe. The Taste of Sunnyside food festival, taking place on May 19, is the perfect opportunity to sample some of the neighborhood’s most unique bites. Attendees at the event will be treated to interesting and delicious food from nearly 30 restaurants in the neighborhood. Here are a few examples of the new foods you might sample during the Taste of Sunnyside. From Colombia Los Verdes: Colombian-style hot dog What’s a Colombian-style hot dog, you ask? Immense! Local fast-casual joint Los Verdes will serve up a mini-version of this dish, consisting of a hot dog on a bun, topped with bacon, cheese, crunchy potato chips, Los Verdes’ signature sauces and a tiny quail egg. Definitely a unique treat! From Paraguay I Love Paraguay: Pastafrola Greenpoint Avenue’s I Love Paraguay brings a sweeter element to this year’s Taste of Sunnyside with the South American dessert pastafrola. Pastafrola has a shortbread-like crust and is filled with quince paste or other flavors of fruit jam – a delicious, sweet tart. This dessert highlights Paraguay’s culinary influences from its Italian and European immigrants. From Tibet Tibetan Dumpling Café: Momos If you haven’t tried a momo yet, it’s time to get right on that. Momos are handmade Tibetan dumplings, filled with a variety of meats or vegetables. The dough is formed into a circle and pleated at the top, and the momos from Tibetan Dumpling Café have a nice, juicy filling that keeps their customers coming back for more. Momos are steamed or pan-fried, but both ways are delicious. If you’re up for a little spice, try it with their housemade chile sauce for an added kick. From Peru Los Pollos: Papa a la Huancaina Sunnyside has a solid selection of Peruvian restaurants, known for their incredible rotisserie chicken. Before sampling the chicken, check out the popular Peruvian appetizer called Papa a la Huancaina – sliced potatoes in a spicy cheese sauce. The dish is native to the Peruvian highlands and is a must try! Hungry yet? Get tickets to the Taste of Sunnyside at www.tasteofsunnyside.com.
