Happy New Year! As we start off the New Year, we have many great things to report on in Long Island City, Astoria and Sunnyside. To start off, the LIC Flea & Food Holiday Market fi nished the holiday season – and year – with a blast! The holiday market was open on three fabulously successful weekends fi lled with unique items, food from all over the world, music, Santa and residents from near and far. Although the Holiday Market has come to an end, we are only months away from the second season of the outdoor LIC Flea & Food market. LIC Flea will re-open in April at the outdoor lot located at 5th Street and 46th Avenue. Before getting into this year’s fi rst issue, we wanted to continue to send our best wishes for a speedy recovery to Alan Capper, one of LIC Courier’s wonderful writers. For our front cover we welcome a LIC resident who is working hard to help others achieve a healthy lifestyle, with a touch of sweetness to each one of her tips. Cassandra Bodzak runs an online website where our readers can check out healthy and unique recipes. What a better way to start the New Year than with a healthier you? We thank New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli for coming to Silvercup Studios, revealing his economic snapshot of our great borough and confi rming we are booming to success! We have the latest update on the closings to the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge in the hopes of preventing any future accidents from occurring. Also, we welcome this year’s fi rst baby, Tenzin Choetso, who received her name from none other than His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. Then continue reading about three female fi lmmakers looking to become leaders in the industry with their new movie set to be released in the fall. In this issue, read about the successful second annual Santathon in Sunnyside, in which $10,000 in monetary and toy donations were given to local organizations. We always welcome your feedback, ideas and want to hear from you in this New Year. Hope you all have a great start to the year, work on those resolutions, stay warm and enjoy everything each neighborhood has to offer. Here’s to a great 2014!
