45 business BEAUX-ARTS AUCTION: LIC’S NEW AUCTION HOUSE Long Island City’s newest auction house is bridging the gap between casual and large-scale auctioning. When Michael Capo and Marc Lester opened Beaux-Arts Auction last October, both men were confident that business would be booming. This is because not only do they have a combined extensive background in the arts, antiques and auctioneering, but also their auction house fills an important niche left vacant by the top-tier houses, Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Phillips, that purposefully focus on specialized clientele and handling items at much higher price points. Another benefit to being an auction house for the secondary market is that Beaux-Arts Auction holds general auctions offering items from each major category of art, antiques, furniture, decorative items, jewelry and collectibles in each of its sales. Larger auction houses are more normally segmented into distinct departments which hold auctions focusing on a single category. This means that if a prospective seller was interested in selling an individual item or even an entire estate, he or she might end up having to wait up to several months for a specific sale at one of the leading auction houses. On the other hand, they might be able to sell the item within weeks at one of Beaux- Arts Auction’s monthly universal sales. Beaux-Arts Auction holds an auction approximately every 35 days. “Our last auction was December 14, and it went very well,” said Capo. “What’s important to know is that although we’re a smaller auction house, we’re still able to get the same prices on valuable items as some of the bigger guys as dealers and collectors alike have become more accustomed to finding and buying items from alternative sources, including online.” Beaux-Arts Auction will be holding its next auction on Saturday, January 25 at 11 a.m., but will also have preview days on January 22, 23 and 24 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and January 25 starting at 9 a.m. The auction house is located at 37-18 Northern Boulevard.
