46new year LIC FLEA: Holiday success & Spring return The holidays shined brighter after three successful weekends at the LIC Flea & Food Holiday Market. The Holiday Market kicked off the season with a weekend fi lled with holiday fun, as people shopped for friends and family, while indulging in food from all over the world. Thousands of visitors, from near and far, came to the Holiday Market, which ran every weekend from December 7 to December 22, inside the warehouse, located at the corner of 5th Street and 46th Avenue. It is connected to the original lot, where last summer’s LIC FLEA & FOOD outdoor LIC Flea was held. Many of LIC Flea’s favorite vendors made a return, along with some fresh new faces, totaling more than 80 unique vendors. The holiday market also presented live music by Dandy Wellington and His Band. JIB Lanes also provided a real bowling alley and, for soccer fans, the New York Cosmos also had professional players signing autographs and offering soccer activities. Children were also able to take pictures with Santa Claus. LIC Flea also featured a bar, built specially for the market and made of wood from the warehouse, serving beer, wine and holiday cocktails. The outdoor LIC Flea & Food market will be back in April, at the lot located at the corner of 5th Street and 46th Avenue. Queens welcomes FIRST NEW YEAR’S BABY BY ANGY ALTAMIRANO The city’s fi rst New Year cry was heard through Elmhurst Hospital as Tenzin Choetso was welcomed into the world. Tenzin was born to parents Metok Dolma and Choegyal Dorjee one second after midnight on New Year’s Day at Elmhurst Hospital Center. The couple, both from Tibet and now living in Woodside, also has another daughter. According to a hospital representative, the baby girl, weighing 6 pounds, 11 ounces, received a name given by the Dalai Lama. The parents reportedly put in a request to the Dalai Lama for the baby’s name while Dolma was pregnant, and the Tibetan spiritual leader responded by giving the name Tenzin, meaning “to conquer the wisdom of Buddha.” His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama was given the name Tenzin Gyatso. “We are thrilled and excited that one of the fi rst babies of 2014 was born at Elmhurst,” said Chris Constantino, Elmhurst Hospital Center’s Executive Director. “Our staff is overjoyed.” Tenzin is not Elmhurst Hospital’s fi rst “New Year’s baby.” In 2013, at exactly midnight, another baby was born at the hospital. Councilmember Costa Constantinides was offi cially sworn into the City Council on December 10 by City Clerk Michael McSweeney. Constantinides, who represents District 22, was accompanied by Councilmember James Gennaro. The lifelong Astoria resident was elected to fi ll departing Peter Vallone Jr.’s seat and represents Astoria, Long Island City and parts of Jackson Heights. The freshman legislator began his term on January 1. Constantinides will have a local inauguration ceremony on January 26 at Long Island City High School, located at 14-30 Broadway in Astoria.
