ONLY FOR RESIDENTS OF LE HAVRE NO GUESTS About 40 people attended the Hurricane Preparedness Seminar last night at the Le Havre Club House. Resident Irene Bernstein, who organized the meeting, learned about the free talks provided by the NYC Office of Emergency Management, at a recent Community Board 7 Meeting. City Councilman Paul Vallone attended and spoke about his concerns for the Beechurst –Whitestone area in terms of city services including public transportation, sanitation and snow removal as well as the problems we have had with past storms. Christina Farrell, the Commissioner of the OEM, presented very specific information on evacuation procedures, how to be prepared should a serious storm hit us again, where public shelters are located ( Bayside and Flushing High Schools are the most notable) , what to do if you have pets, etc. She provided a variety of handouts and maps, showing the new zones for storm purposes. Zone I is the most vulnerable area and Zone 2, where several of Le Havre’s buildings are located, would be next. We also learned of a new service provided by the website : www.nyc.gov. The feature is called “Notify NYC”. If you type that into the search, you will be directed to the registry for this service. You can select from several types of alerts to receive, including traffic jams, school closings, subway problems and severe weather alerts. Another helpful aide is the Ready NYC app for smartphones. It is free and it will walk you through all the planning needed in case of a severe emergency, such as your health information (medications that you will need to pack if you have to leave your home), locations of agreed-upon meeting places for you and other members of your family, what to include in a “go-bag”, and more. In summation, the meeting was extremely worthwhile and informative. WWW.QUEENSCOURIER.COM | NOVEMBER 2014 | LEHAVRE COURIER 9
