N E W S J U L Y 6 L E H A V R E Le Havre Renovations – The Porticos and More The brick work around the pillars enhances the entries BY JILL DAVIS Everyone has been notified about the ongoing improvements being done across the LeHavre property. What residents may not realize is how complex some of these projects are. Currently, the most involved initiative is the concrete work being done under the porticos. At first glance, this may not seem like a complicated project; what’s the big deal about some cement? You might be surprised. First, let’s go back to why this undertaking is so important. The current balusters are original to the buildings, meaning they’re approximately 60 years old. As is evident, age has taken its toll. Water has also not been kind as the original drainage system is not sufficient to rid the portico areas of water, and flooding issues have been chronic throughout the years. Board President Stanley Greenberg said, “The concrete under the porticos needs to be done for both practical purposes as well as aesthetics.” All property renovations need to be done correctly, but a project of this magnitude requires special expertise. “We hired an engineering firm to ensure that the quality of work would be top notch,” Stanley said, “and we also interviewed several construction 6 LEHAVRE COURIER | JULY 2016 | WWW.QNS.COM firms.” LeHavre selected local businesses for both jobs, hiring Merritt Engineering in Flushing for the engineering plans and Sal Salamone Contracting in Whitestone for the work. Board member Steve Young explained, “We decided to dress the areas up with pavers and have brick around the bottom of the pillars,” he Care has been taken for the patterns to fl ow with the surrounding areas.
