SEPTEMBER 18
BY JILL DAVIS OOuutt About
&This is for those of us who can barely sew on a button: September is National Sewing
Month. Even though my research hasn’t found who got this started, I did find out that
interest went all the way to the White House. Weird, right?
Turns out that in 1982, Ronald Reagan issued a proclamation declaring September
as National Sewing Month. I know, who would declare an entire month in honor of a
skill hardly anyone uses anymore? But President Reagan declared it “in recognition of
the importance of home sewing to our nation,” and because it was a presidential proclamation,
this is a true “National” event. So the next time you go to the tailor to sew a
hem, say a special ‘thank you’ this month.
September also marks the 70th anniversary of the American Business Women’s Association
(ABWA), which eventually led to Business Women’s Day each September 22.
Backstory: During WWII, women filled the workplace void left by soldiers, and many
weren’t too keen on putting their aprons back on when the war ended and the vets came
back. So, a forward-thinking businessman, Mr. Hilary A. Bufton, Jr. and three businesswomen
from Kansas City founded the ABWA in 1949.
Upon ABWA’s founding, Mr. Bufton said that businesswomen “deserved equal business
opportunities. They had gained tremendous business knowledge during World War
II through necessity…” This day finally became official in 1983 when a joint Congressional
resolution was passed and signed by Ronald Reagan declaring the date Business
Women’s Day.
Here are some fun activities coming up in September. Enjoy!
New York Renaissance Faire
Sunday, September 1 –
Sunday, October 6, 10am-7pm
Rte. 17A, Tuxedo, NY
renafair.com
Day trip! If you’re looking for
something different to do (or perhaps
are seeking your knight in shining
armor), take a drive up to Tuxedo,
New York, for the annual Renaissance
Faire. It’s only an hour away (I won’t
vouch for traffic) and it’s a fun outing
with the kids. You’ll think you’re in Merry Olde England when you mingle with costumed
minstrels, shop in an artisan market and watch knights joust. Tickets are $16 per
adult/$8 per child.
Belmont Uncorked
Saturday, September 14,
1:30pm-5:00pm
Belmont Racetrack
2150 Hempstead
Turnpike, Elmont
nyra.com/belmont
I like Belmont even when
it’s corked, but uncorked is
that much better! The ponies
return to Belmont for
the fall racing season with an event open only to those 21 and older. Attendees will enjoy
local, national, and international wines as well as craft beers served in the North Shore
Terrace on the 4th floor clubhouse (which has a great view of the racetrack). Betting
windows will, of course, be open.
The Queens County Farm Museum is busy this month. Check out these three popular
events:
39th Annual Antique Motorcycle
Show
Sunday, September 15,
11am–4pm
First up in September is the farm’s
annual Antique Motorcycle Show,
the oldest such show in NYC. Showoffs
show off their old hogs to vie for
trophies in a variety of categories.
There’ll be live music, food vendors
and, of course, bikes for sale. Advance
tickets are $7 all ages, or pay
$11 at the door.
18 CRYDER POINT COURIER | SEPTEMBER 2019 | WWW.QUEENSCOURIER.COM
37th Annual
Queens County Fair
Saturday & Sunday, September
21 & 22, 11am–6pm
Did you know that the
first county fair was held
in Queens back in 1693
(that’s not a typo!). This
weekend-long event offers
everything from pie eating
and corn husking contests
to pig races and hayrides to
carnival rides and midway
games. There’s also a Bavarian
beer garden and craft
and food vendors. There
will even be blue ribbon competitions in arts and crafts and even livestock (moo!). Advance
Tickets are $10 for adults/$5 for kids 12 and under; $15/$8 at the door.
The Amazing Maize
Maze®
Saturdays & Sundays,
September 21–
October 26,
11am–4:30pm
Don’t get lost in NYC’s
only corn maze (unless you
want to). You’ll be prepped
for the challenge with a
“stalk talk” so you can navigate
the maze (which covers
three acres). Advance
Tickets: $10 for adults/$5
for ages 4-11; $15/ $8 at
the door; free for children
3 and under. Note that group rates are available for 10 or more people.
The Queens Farm Museum is located at 73-50 Little Neck Parkway. Check out queensfarm.
org or call 718-347-3276 for more info.
Meanwhile, here’s what else is happening over the next few weeks:
Oompahfest
Sunday, September 22, 10am-11pm
Plattedeutsche Park Biergarten
1132 Hempstead Turnpike, Franklin Square
516-354-3131
parkrestaurant.com
It’s a little early for Octoberfest, but this ‘Oompahfest’
is a good warm up. Knockwurst, bratwurst…what’s the
wurst that could happen? And even though there will be
loads of beer, it’s a good day for kids too, with games and
raffles. And don’t forget the live German music. Admission
is $10 for damen und herren/free for kinder under
age 12.
Jerry Seinfeld: Gala 2019
October 12, 8:30pm
Tilles Center
720 Northern Blvd., Brookville
tillescenter.org
Since this is a gala (honoring Gillis
and George Poll of the Poll restaurants),
it’s a pricey night…but then again, this
is Jerry’s Tilles Center debut. Tickets
start at $149, but if you really want to
go all-out, $1,250 will get you ‘benefactor’
status that includes a cocktail reception,
gala dinner and a tip-top seat
for the show.
