President’s Message
COVID VACCINE UPDATE
As of July 30, the NYC positivity
rate was 2.97%, up from
1.78% two weeks prior. This
is a lower incidence than in
parts of the country where
vaccination rates are lower
than in New York, but is nevertheless
increasing. The CDC
cites the Delta variant as the
predominant reason for the upswing.
Specifically, the CDC has reported
that fully vaccinated people can transmit
the virus, particularly the Delta strain,
which is much more contagious than earlier
Covid variants. However, the CDC also reports
that while fully vaccinated people can
transmit the virus, the vaccine is extremely
effective in preventing serious illness. Per
the CDC, approximately 97% of people who
are being hospitalized are unvaccinated.
In response to the changing data, Mayor
de Blasio reported on August 2 that masks
are recommended to be worn by everyone
in public indoor settings, whether vaccinated
or not. The exception to this recommendation
is that masks are not necessary
if you are vaccinated and are certain that
those around you are vaccinated as well.
Note to parents of children 12 to 17 years
old: The mayor also announced that this is
the last week that kids in this age range can be
fully vaccinated in time for the start of school.
At press time, NYC public schools are scheduled
to open on Monday, September 13.
In keeping with the mayor’s announcement,
masks remain optional but are recommended
for residents at Cryder Point.
Masks continue to be required for staff
and visitors.
