JULY 18

BY JILL DAVIS We all scream for ice cream! In 1984, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed July
as National Ice Cream Month, and established National Ice Cream Day as the
third Sunday of the month, which this year falls on Sunday, July 15. So in true
patriotic spirit, I think we all should throw caution and calories to the wind and
enjoy some smooth, refreshing ice cream that day, don’t you?
Did you know there’s some controversy over who created the ice cream cone?
Here’s the scoop: Charles E. Minches of St. Louis, Missouri, is largely credited with
the invention. At the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis (on July 23, to be exact), he
filled a pastry cone with two large spoonfuls of ice cream to make the first ice
cream cone. Voila! But wait: Italo Marchiony of New York City filed a patent for the
ice cream cone months before the fair even opened. And he was selling lemon
ice in cones as early as 1896! (I personally think Mr. Marchiony wins this debate.)
Here’s what’s coming up in and around the area over the coming weeks:
Allergic to Salad
Saturday, July 14, 11am–1pm
Queens County Farm Museum
73-50 Little Neck Parkway
queensfarm.org
718-347-3276
Yes, “Allergic to Salad” is the name of a real event. The Farm does this every July,
so I guess it must get a good turnout. The idea is that families get together for a
“hands-on cooking experience using farm-fresh ingredients” and “prepare simple
recipes using seasonal, Queens Farm-grown produce.” So lettuce get together
(groan). Tickets are $20 and you have to buy them in advance.
Dion DiMucci in Concert
Saturday, July 21, 8pm
NYCB Theatre at Westbury
960 Brush Hollow Road, Westbury
thetheatreatwestbury.com
516-334-0800
Who’s this, you ask? You may know
him simply as “Dion,” or as the lead
singer of the old 50s group, Dion &
the Belmonts. Or you may just remember
his hit songs, which include
“The Wanderer,” “Runaround Sue,”
and “Abraham, Martin & John.” He
was inducted into the Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame in 1989, and it’s hard to believe he’ll have just had his 79th birthday
when he takes the stage at Westbury (time sure doo-wops on!). Tickets start at $17.
NYC Restaurant Week
Monday, July 23-Friday, August 17
Various locations
Happily, NYC Restaurant Week actually lasts
closer to a month, giving food lovers ample time
to try out new venues for lunch ($26 per person)
or dinner ($42 per person). The list of participating
restaurants was not available at press time,
but we do know that reservations will open on July 9, so check out nycgo.com/
restaurant-week then to book a good table. Eat, drink, and be merry!

You can tell your fan base is getting older when a concert starts at 6:00 on a
Saturday night. Just sayin’. In any case, I don’t think I’d have thought of putting
these two groups on the same ticket, but what the heck, it sounds like fun. So
leave your love shack for an evening and enjoy these iconic 80s bands. Tickets
range from $29.50 to $179.50.
Jimmy Buffett
Thursday, August 2,
8pm
Jones Beach Theater

Are you bummed
out that Jimmy’s
Broadway show, “Escape
to Margaritaville,”
closed on July 1?
I didn’t think so. And
it doesn’t matter anyway,
because Parrotheads
can rejoice in a
live concert by Jimmy
himself in this onenight
only show. Fun
fact: Did you know
that Jimmy Buffet’s an author? He’s written several books, including three #1
best sellers and two children’s books. Impress your friends over a margarita with
that bit of trivia! Tickets start at $53.
Lost ‘80s Life

Rome UK, Animotion and Nu
Shooz. Don’t feel bad, I don’t
know who most of these people
are either. Prices are $58,
$78, and $88.
