16 C R Y D E R P O I N T MAY Out & About Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 8 Just about every restaurant around will be offering special Mother’s Day menus today, but here are a couple of other ideas in case you want to do something a little different: A Day at the Races: Belmont Racetrack 2150 Hempstead Tpke., Elmont 718-641-4700 www.nyra.com/belmont For many moms, sleeping in is one of the special perks on Mother’s Day. But if you’re a real early bird, try Breakfast at Belmont, which starts at 7am and goes until 9:30am. You can enjoy breakfast and watch the thoroughbreds during their morning workouts. After breakfast, you can take a free tram ride (weather permitting) through the stable area, enjoy a free Paddock Show and participate in a free Starting Gate demonstration. Parking and admission are free, but if you want to stay to watch the races, you’ll be charged admission to re-enter. Here’s a great option at Belmont if you have little kids: have a picnic lunch on the grounds. This is a BYOF (bring your own food) option—hey Mom, make somebody else cook! The kids will love the playground and the petting zoo, and the price is right: parking is free and $5.00 admission per person to the grounds. If you want something fancier, have brunch in the Garden Terrace Room. It’s on the fourth floor of the Clubhouse and I can attest that it has great views of the entire racetrack. There’s a special Mother’s Day buffet for $55 per adult and $18 per child (3 to 12 years old) beginning at 11:30am. Be aware of Belmont’s dress policy for the restaurant: “Elegant attire has long been a tradition at Belmont Park. Ladies and Gentlemen who honor this tradition are always appreciated.” New York City Cruise World’s Fair Marina 125-00 Northern Blvd., Flushing 718-446-1100 Skylinecruises.com Skyline Cruises is offering a choice of an afternoon brunch or evening dinner on Mother’s Day. Both are four-hour cruises aboard the Skyline Princess that take you around New York City to see the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty, complete with a live DJ. Jackets aren’t required, but jeans and sneakers are not allowed. The brunch includes an assortment of muffins, bagels, omelets with sides, turkey, prime rib and pasta and, of course, desserts. Boarding is at 10:30am for an 11:00am-3:00pm sail. Prices range from $84 per adult with an open bar to $13 for children under 5. If you prefer dinner, boarding is at 4:30pm for a sail from 5:00pm-9:00pm. The menu includes chicken scaloppini, prime rib, lemon sole and other goodies. Prices range from $112 per adult with an open bar to $13 for children under 5. 16 cryder point courier | MAY 2016 | WWW.QNS.COM Happy Mother’s Day to all moms out there. Be sure someone spoils you on your day! And gear up for the first long weekend marking the beginning of summer, Memorial Day Weekend. Brunch at Queens Botanical Garden 43-50 Main Street, Flushing qbgmothersday.eventbrite.com Okay, so if you’re not into horses or you tend to get seasick, how about a nice, quiet brunch? This is a beautiful setting for a special Mother’s Day. The Garden is offering an array of traditional brunch fare including omelets, bagels, muffins and more. Work off the meal with a tour of the living museum and its display of lush greenery and beautiful plants. Brunch served at 10am and 1pm; $22 to $28 per person. Other Happenings in May A Night to Remember – Tribute Concert Sunday, May 15, 3pm Queensborough Community College Performing Arts Center 222-05 56 Avenue, Bayside 718-631-6311 On December 4, 1956, it just so happened that music legends Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley all coincidentally met at the same place at the same time. It became known as one of the most historic jam sessions ever, and I bet there was a whole lotta shakin’ going on. A Night to Remember is a live tribute concert to that legendary night and will feature a jukebox full of their greatest hits. So put on your blue suede shoes, make a left at the heartbreak hotel and walk the line to Queensborough and see the show. All seats are $35. Spring Sheep Shearing Sunday, May 22, 11am-4pm Queens County Farm Museum Have you ever seen a sheep get a haircut? Me neither, but this is an annual event at the Queens County Museum and I’ve heard that it really is fun (honest, I’ve heard that). In addition to watching the sheep get shorn, you can observe wool spinning demos. Not that excited? You can also go to the plant shop, get a tour of the place with one of the farmers or get creative with some arts and crafts. There will also be live music, hayrides and food all day. Admission is $5 for everyone and free for Farm Members. By Jill Davis
