NYC Health + Hospitals
recently honored 31 nurse
professionals from across
the public health care system
as part of its annual Nursing
Excellence Awards. This
year’s winners were selected
from a pool of 465 nominees
by a panel of nurse leaders.
At NYC Health + Hospitals/
Coney Island, we’re
proud of Jawwad Butt, RN
– a staff nurse in our Cardiology
Catheterization Lab –
for being named to this elite
group and for his prestigious
Excellence in Clinical Nursing
Award! Congratulations,
Jawwad!
Jawwad sees nursing as a
way to give back to the community.
We caught up with
Jawwad to learn more.
Why did you want to
pursue a career in nursing?
My family emigrated here
from Pakistan in the early
1980’s, and worked hard to
provide opportunities for my
siblings and I. Being part of
something bigger than myself
has always been important
to me when it comes to
community, family, friends
and work. Having the opportunity
to be part of someone’s
well-being is a reward itself;
it’s what makes me work better
and harder at everything
I do.
What would you say is
one of the most important
qualities of a nurse?
My experiences helping
my late father battle cancer
showed me the importance
of compassion and empathy
for all, and made me a better
nurse. I’ve seen how illness
can affect not only the patient
suffering, but also the
loved ones.
What inspired you to
specialize in the cardiac
catheterization lab?
I worked in critical/emergency
care for roughly three
and a half years, and learned
a lot during that time. When
Coney Island Hospital opened
its new cardiac catheterization
lab, I saw an opportunity
to help develop this service
and participate in medical
procedures for people dealing
with heart conditions
like heart attacks. This service
has helped many members
of this community; being
from this area, it was a
proud moment for me to be
part of the cardiac team that
made a difference in each patient’s
life. I really want to
make a difference and help
bring new and improved services
to Coney Island Hospital
and the community.
What are you hoping to
achieve in the future?
I plan on going for my
masters in Family Nurse
Practitioner, and continue
my services by helping those
in need. I enjoy being a direct
part of the health care team
that makes a difference in
someone’s life, and helps to
relieve their concerns and
distress. I also plan to continue
to do my part to ensure
Coney Island Hospital is a
desirable place that people
can come to for help when in
need.
Jawwad, and his fellow
award recipients, are among
the more than 9,000 nurses at
NYC Health + Hospitals who
provide care throughout the
health system across the five
boroughs.
