The Natalie Prospere and
Friends Only curated project,
Friends Only, Jamaica has
dropped its first culture-bridging
single, via Mass Appeal, “Never
Be the Same.” With collaboration
from Ft. Buddy, Kabaka Pyramid,
MediSun, EarthGang and Hector
Roots Lewis, the single is produced
by Dre Day. Prospere said she was
“keen on creating an organic
world that merges cultures,” stating
that “Never Be the Same” is
“sure to pull you in.” “’Never Be
the Same’ is a strong lead track
that encapsulates the essence
of last summer where Friends
Caribbean L 34 ife, NOV. 26-DEC. 2, 2021
Only, Jamaica was spontaneously
recorded in Ocho Rios, Jamaica,”
Prospere said. “The track effortlessly
fuses the passion of some of
the best lyricists from the US rap
scene, Buddy and EarthGang with
the staple rhythm, vocal prowess,
and heart of Jamaica’s reggae
artist Kabaka Pyramid, Hector
Roots Lewis and MediSun,” she
added. Prospere said “’Never Be
the Same’s’ enticing tempo and
high energy from start to finish,
with its smooth chorus solidifies
its immense replay value.
“‘Never Be the Same’ is sure
to get you excited about what’s to
come from Friends Only, Jamaica
Bahamaian artist, John
Beadle. Artist and TERN Gallery
— an album that is full of
surprises and vocal pairings that
will withstand the test of time,”
she added. “Stay tuned!” Friends
Only Jamaica said its mission is
“to bridge the gap between our
favorite local talent in Jamaica
and visiting artists and producers
from the US.”
Red Hook, Brooklyn.
Aberdeen-Jones told Caribbean
Life on Sunday that the
recent show and fundraiser, on
Oct. 23, in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn
was so successful that she
decided to bring the production
to Red Hook, starting on Nov. 27
and running until Dec. 18.
“The production was of such
cultural importance and was so
well received that it will continue
as a pop-up exhibit from
Nov. 27, 2021 to Dec. 18, 2021 at
the Peninsula Art Space, located
at 352 Van Brunt St., corner of
Sullivan Street, Brooklyn,” she
said.
In collaboration with internationally
renowned calypsonian,
David Rudder, Aberdeen-Jones
said the show is donating computers
to the computer lab of
Rudder’s alma mater, St. Francis
Boys’ College, formerly Belmont
Boys’ RC Secondary School, in
Trinidad and Tobago.
“Thus far, with proceeds from
the door as well as direct donations
from T&T’s 1964 Tokyo
Olympic medalists, Mr. Edwin
Roberts and Mr. Kent Bernard,
we are able to purchase two fully
loaded laptops for the school,”
Aberdeen-Jones said. “The goal is
at least four. As such, the cause
will continue in tandem with the
exhibit at the Peninsula.
“Every piece that sells, while
on display there, will give 5 percent
to the cause,” she added.
“The David Rudder portrait in
24Kt. gold will contribute 15
percent of its sale price to the
cause.”
Aberdeen-Jones gave special
thanks to Ali’s Roti Shop
in Brooklyn for its “outstanding
food and service to the cause.
“Their unexpected generosity
enabled us to feed a nearby
shelter on the evening of Oct.
23,” she said.

and storytelling performances
will be on display to honor the

examples of Beadle’s ability
to merge painting, sculpture
and installation, creating a
rich sense of line, dimension
and texture.”
TERN said Beadle’s carbonized
mahogany carvings
fuse a variety of natural wood
textures into single compositions.
“In his circular wall sculptures,
round indentations,
thinly etched lines and curving
hollows mimic the various
textures found naturally
in wood, allowing these different
patterns to blend into one
another,” it said. “These natural
patterns are echoed in the
grain of the wood itself, which
remains a prominent feature
of these pieces despite the
carbonization of the wood.”
The artist contrasts his
circular carvings with two
freestanding, upright wooden
sculptures, TERN said.
“The natural shape of the
tree is referenced in these
rectangular pieces, continuing
the motifs of naturalistic
linework and engravings,” it
said, adding that Beadle sees
all of his wood carvings as a
kind of drawing—except that,
instead of adding onto the
existing material, these carvings
require him to subtract
from it, “as one would do to a
wood block for printmaking.”
