The CWI president did not mention
Andre Russell’s name, but the Jamaican
power hitter is the only West
Indies player who was drafted to play
in the Lanka Premier League (LPL)
who chose not to tour New Zealand
with the West Indies. He has since
pulled out the LPL tournament.
The regional team will play New
Zealand in three Twenty20s from
Nov. 27 to 30, followed by two Test
matches which bowls off on December3.
Some years ago, the court basically
told CWI that it cannot restrain
the trade of players the board has
not contracted otherwise. It said the
player has every legal right to play
his trade wherever he seeks or deems
appropriate for him to do so even if he
is invited to play for the West Indies.
“There is no obligation whatsoever,”
the court said.
Skerritt said players will not be
penalized for choosing leagues over
West Indies cricket.

West Indies Assistant Coach,
Roddy Estwick, has urged the
regional team to step up to the
next level in the upcoming series
against New Zealand, stressing it
is time to start producing series
wins in order to become a force to
be reckoned with.
Speaking in Barbados before
the team left for New Zealand for
the Nov. 27 to Dec. 15 tour, Estwick
said the time had come in
West Indies’ development to move
beyond the occasional Test victory
to stage where they were playing
consistently enough to win series.
West Indies has not won a Test
series in New Zealand in 25 years
and has won just three series overall
inside the last five years.
The regional team endured a
nightmare on their last tour of
New Zealand three years ago, suffering
heavy defeats in both Tests
inside four days.
The Tests will be preceded by
three Twenty20s from Nov. 27-30
in Auckland and Mount Maunganui.
situation.”
“We have the guy Da Silva, I think he
can act as an opener or groom him as an
opener. He looked a good compact sort
of player,” he said.
Lloyd’s comments on StarCom Radio
Mason and Guest cricket show in Barbados
come against concerns of the form
of Braithwaite and Campbell, both of
whom have struggled in recent times.
Braithwaite, the senior member of
the partnership, averaged a paltry 12
from 10 Tests prior to the England
tour earlier this year where he finally
managed to carve out his first halfcentury
in nearly two years. Campbell
has managed only one half-century in
188 innings since making his debut last
January when England toured the Caribbean
and averages just 25.
Da Silva 25, who is part of a sixman
reserve group for the New Zealand
series, was also a reserve for their tour
of England where he shone in an intersquad
match at Manchester with an
unbeaten hundred and half-century.
Lloyd said West Indies will have a difficult
time against a well-drilled Black
Caps side to come away with a positive
result.
The 20-man West Indies squad
arrived last week in New Zealand and
will go into quarantine for 14 days.
The opening Test is set for Seddon
Park in Hamilton from Dec. 3-7, with
the second test carded for the historic
Basic Reserve in Wellington starting
four days later.
A three-match T20 series will start
from Nov. 27 which will precede the
Test tour.
ting it well at age 41. A lot of dedication
and hard work has paid off over the
years. Still here, still doing it, same way.
Very grateful.”
Gayle, who struggled to break into
the Kings XI side this season, now has
276 runs from six innings at an average
of 46.
He tried to show his disappointment
when he was bowled by Archer for 99,
flung his bat in frustration after being
dismissed in the final over.
He was fined 10 percent of his match
fee for breaching IPL’s Code of Conduct
in the match against Rajasthan Royal.
