Brooklyn College Cancer Center to host first
Brooklyn Breast Cancer Symposium

Furthering its mission to
engage the community with
cancer-related information and
support, the Brooklyn College
Cancer Center (BCCC-CURE)
will participate in the first
Brooklyn Breast Cancer Symposium
with Maimonides Medical
Center (MMC), SUNY Downstate
Health Sciences University and
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer
Center (MSKCC) on Friday,
Oct. 29, from 8:50 am to 1:05
pm, according to Brooklyn College
(BC) News.
It said all events are free,
online and open to the public.
In a four-part symposium,
Brooklyn College faculty members
Maria Contel, director of
BCCC-CURE; Jenny Basil, associate
director Community Outreach;
and Brian Gibney, associate
director, Education, will join
a dozen physicians, researchers
and nurse practitioners from
Maimonides Medical Center,
SUNY Downstate Health Sciences
University and Memorial
Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
to discuss a wide range of topics
related to breast health, BC
News said.
It said two sessions will focus
on research including basic science
research, preclinical studies
and clinical trials.
One session, “Taking Charge
of Your Breast Health During a
Pandemic,” is devoted to public
outreach, BC News said.
It said the final session will be
a conversation with prospective
and current nursing students
and professionals. The event is
also supported by Dr. Donna
Marie E. Manasseh, chief, Breast
Surgery from Maimonides Medical
Center.
The Brooklyn College Cancer
Center (CommUnity Outreach,
Research and Education) BCCCCURE

was established in 2020 at
Brooklyn College.
Its mission is “to enhance
the lives of patients affected by
cancer with a special focus on
Brooklyn residents,” BC News
said.

research on cancer and combine
research forces with local
(New York City) cancer treatment
centers and hospitals, and
Brooklyn communities, while
delivering first-class educational
opportunities to our undergraduate
and graduate students,” it
said.
Twenty-five faculty members
are already engaged in cancer
or cancer-related research at
Brooklyn College, BC News said.
Although many of the center’s
activities began in fall 2020, it
said the center’s official inauguration
will be held in fall 2021.
