SURINAME
The International Monetary Fund
(IMF) says it is committed to working
diligently in the coming weeks to
ensure that the request by the authorities
in Suriname for an arrangement
can be expeditiously presented to the
IMF’s executive board for its consideration.
IMF Managing Director, Kristalina
Georgieva, in a statement,
noted that the
executive directors of
the Washington-based
financial institution had
been briefed on the Dutch-speaking Caribbean
Community (CARICOM) country’s
request for an arrangement under
the Extended Fund Facility (EFF).
She said President Chan Santokhi’s
administration inherited a very difficult
economic situation in the country and
to restore macroeconomic stability, it
has undertaken a broad range of policy
actions, including delivering on most
of the prior actions that were agreed
in the staff-level agreement reached in
April.
She said over the past several weeks,
the Suriname authorities have made
important progress in implementing
their home-grown policy plan.
TRINIDAD
Caribbean Airlines Ltd. (CAL) has
reported another operating loss for a
second year in a row.The airline said it
lost US$48 million in the first half of
2021. In a release last
week to the media summarizing
the airline’s
unaudited financial
reports, CAL reported
an operating loss of US$48 million for
the first half of the year.
The airline’s performance was consistent
with the same period the year
before, when it saw a loss of US$48.7
million.
“In a year when the airline and travel
industry were pulverized by the COVID-
19 pandemic CAL’s unaudited financial
results for the six months ended June
2021 reflected the depressed market
conditions,” CAL said in the release.
Last year was described as the worst
year ever for aviation recording the
largest decline in air passenger numbers.
This year was expected to be no
different.

The new Permanent Representative of
Guyana to the Organization of American
States (OAS), Samuel Hinds, has presented
his credentials today to OAS Secretary
General, Luis Almagro in a virtual
ceremony.
During the ceremony on Tuesday, the
OAS said Almagro highlighted the common
values between the hemispheric
institution and the Caribbean country
and reiterated the organization’s commitment
to the defense of democratic
institutions and equitable access to vaccines.
“Ambassador Hinds, during the pandemic,
we have worked intensely in this
organization, and we continue to do
so,” Almagro said. “From the OAS, we
have carried out actions with PAHO (Pan
American Health Organization) and the
IDB (Inter-American Development Bank)
— also with the Joint Summit Working
Group — to coordinate strategies to mitigate
the consequences of the pandemic
in the hemisphere.”
“Mister Secretary General, I commend
you in your role as the head of
this organization and the members of
the OAS Permanent Council, particularly
those constituting the CARICOM group,
that initiated and endorsed on Feb. 17 the
resolution on ‘The Equitable Distribution
of COVID-19 Vaccines,’ that was adopted
by acclamation,” Hinds said.
Guyana has been a member of the
OAS since 1991. Hinds is Guyana’s fifth
Permanent Representative to the OAS.
