BY JOSEPH MONDELLO
Seasons greetings Post
620 members, and a belated
Happy Hanukkah to all of our
Jewish friends. It’s starting
to look a lot like Christmas at
the Post. Our beautiful Christmas
tree is up and proudly
decorated with red, white and
blue. Thank you Patrick, nice
job. With holiday lights surrounding
the bar, and Jeanette
mixing up some special
holiday drinks for the annual
Post Christmas Party on Friday,
it’s sure to be a swell time.
Don’t forget the date, Dec. 17,
starting around 6 p.m. Come
join the festivities. Bring a
“Toys for Tots” while your at
it.
We are getting closer to
nailing down our plans for a
Valentine’s Day dinner-dance
at the Post featuring “The
Many Voices of Denis Dell.”
Schedule date is Saturday,
Feb. 12, 2022. Don’t forget to
pay your membership dues
before the end of December.
That card is worth its weight
in gold.
Digging around the Post , I
came across a book titled “The
American Legion-Department
of New York.” It was written
by the 1939 NY Department
historian. It captures the moment
the American Legion
was born in Paris, France, in
1919. The concept of creating
such an organization came
from a wounded WWI service
man laying in a hospital. The
book details the framework
that created its by-laws and
constitution.

It also list the names and
numbers of the Post throughout
the state of New York. The
oldest Post in the Bronx and
still serving is the John Fraser
Bryan Post 19. Followed
by Leonard H. Hawkins Post
156, Theodore Korony 253 and
Samuel H. Young 620. They are
all named after a local person
who died during the Great War.
The current members of these
posts still carry on the tradition
of those who came before
us. There are few more American
Legion posts still active
around the Bronx, but many
have closed its doors due to
lack of participation and membership.
What a great loss to
the community.
We are always looking for
veterans who are good leaders
and enjoy helping others. On
another note, a few of our Legion
family members, and local
veterans had a chance to see
the Broadway play “ The Temptations”
last week. Tickets
were provided by the TDF Veterans
Theatregoing Program,
which sends NYC veterans to
Broadway shows for free.
What a great time we all
had. As we come to the end of
the year, please take it slow
and enjoy this time to be with
friends and families in celebrating
the true meaning of
Christmas.
The world needs healing. Do
your part in keeping it safe for
others. Peace and love. For God
and Country.

On hand to help light the ceremonial menorah set up by the
Rabbi, was Councilwoman Elect Marjorie Velazquez, who Rabbi
Pewzner of the Bronx Jewish Center said was a good friend to
the Bronx Jewish Center, and had been a friend from before
she became involved in politics. Live entertainment was provided
by Bobby Doowah, there were events especially for children,
and a delicious array of food from chicken, potato latkes,
to salad, and jelly donuts.
