Temple Hatikva November Shabbat Service and Adult Education
When the temps grow cold,
where can you fi nd a warm
welcome, friendly fellowship
and a free nosh in the Pelham
Parkway area? Temple Hatikva
fi ts that bill.
All welcome to join Cantor
Kyle Cherry and members
of the congregation for our
‘Shabbat of Thanks’ service
on Friday evening, November
22, at 7:30 p.m., a nod to the
approaching Thanksgiving
holiday. The service will be
followed by Shabbat Kiddush
refreshments and fellowship.
Two days later, on Sunday, November
24, the next session of
Adult Education will begin at
10 a.m.
Temple Hatikva’s monthly
Friday evening services begin
at 7:30 p.m. Each service is followed
by a free Kiddush with
refreshments and fellowship,
a time to relax and get to know
your neighbors.
The temple, located in
Bronx House at 990 Pelham
Parkway South, offers all
community residents a warm
and welcoming atmosphere in
which to learn more about and
connect to Judaism. Monthly
Shabbat Services with traditional
prayers in Hebrew and
English, offering a meaningful
experience to all, even
those with no synagogue background.
Informative Sunday
Adult Education sessions feature
lively discussions, designed
to be comfortable regardless
of level of knowledge,
background or expertise.
“Big dinner, family, and
gratitude for the blessings
of food and freedom? What
could be more Jewish?” said
Cantor Kyle Cherry. “Thanksgiving
is the American holiday
that applies and appeals
to all ethnicities, especially
the Hebrew people. With our
heritage of seeking peace and
freedom for generations, nothing
could be more in line with
our traditions than this wonderfully
universal holiday.
As a Jew, I am humbled by the
gifts given to me by Hashem.
As an American, I am grateful
for my freedom and the right
to be who I am, as should we
all.” Monthly Adult Education
sessions are held on the Sunday
mornings, from October
through May (with a winter
break in January and February).
This year Cantor Kyle’s
theme is the examination of
varying traditions between
Jewish communities around
the world. This month’s focus
will be on the history and development
of Sephardic traditions
and how they compare
to the more commonly known
Ashkenazic. Every Adult Ed
session begins at 10 a.m. with
bagels and cream cheese,
juice, cake and coffee, all free
of charge.
Be sure to also mark your
calendar for the Hanukah
Shabbat service on Friday,
December 20. The December
service will celebrate the upcoming
joyous holiday with
special prayers, followed by a
Kiddush serving traditional
holiday favorites of potato latkes
with applesauce and sufganiyot
(jelly donuts), which
will also supplement the bagel
breakfast at the Sunday Adult
Ed session on December 22.

Our next meeting and the
last for 2019 will be held on
Tuesday, November 26, at
7:30 p.m. at the Villa Barone
Manor.
Our speaker will be Sr. Seline
Flores SSJB and the marketing
team from Providence
Rest, our neighbor in Country
Club. Sr. Seline will talk about
all of the programs offered at
Providence Rest, which can
help you in your time of need.
We look forward to hearing
from Sister and the members
of her team. Please join us. We
look forward to seeing you.
After November, our next
meeting will be held in March
2020. We wish everyone in
Throggs Neck and beyond
a wonderful Thanksgiving.
May your time with family
and friends bring you peace
and happiness!
If you need us, call us at (718)
823-0327 or message us on our
Facebook page...Throggs Neck
Homeowners Association. You
will fi nd up to date community
notices on our page.
Public safety and the cleanliness of
our community are amongst my largest
priorities, and so naturally I think
that the illegal dumping crisis affl icting
all fi ve boroughs is extremely problematic.
Illegal dumping, or the unlawful
discarding of materials and debris
from a vehicle into any public space,
can be punishable up to $40,000 for an
infraction, beginning at $4,000 for the
fi rst offence. This practice is a health
risk and an unsightly mar on our otherwise
clean district. We feel safe and
confi dent when our community is free
from dirt and grime.
I have taken the liberty of funding
independently and placing ‘No Illegal
Dumping’ signs in various locations
throughout our community, targeting
areas where illegal dumping is especially
prominent. These signs warn potential
dumpers of community surveillance
and of the fi ne punishment that
escalates with each subsequent offense.
So far, the locations with warning
signs include:
Williamsbridge Road to Pelham
Parkway South to Mace Avenue, Lydig
Avenue from White Plains Road
to Matthew Avenue, the intersection
of Westchester Avenue and Wilkinson
Avenue to Amendola Plaza (including
Crosby, Edison, and Buhre Avenue) in
Pelham Bay area, East Tremont Avenue
from Bruckner Boulevard to Miles
Avenue, Hutchinson Parkway Service
Road from Middletown Road to Wilkinson
Road, Bruckner Boulevard Service
Road from Hollywood Avenue to Wilkinson
Road, Sackett Avenue, Eastchester
Road to Bronxdale Avenue, and the Fort
Schulyer Houses by Cross Bronx Expressway
Service Road (Throgs Neck
Expressway to East 177th Street).
I implore you to call my District Offi
ce at (718) 931-1721 or email MGjonaj@
council.nyc.gov to suggest a new location
for a ‘No Illegal Dumping’ sign.
But, that’s not the only thing you
can do to get in on the issue. Community
policing is also a proven tactic in
preventing unsavory behavior, and so
I would like to make you aware of the
Illegal Dumping Awards and Tips Program,
where community members will
receive up to 50% of the fi ne given to the
lawbreaker. Affi davits and tip reports
can be submitted at http://www.nyc.
gov/dsny, and must include the time,
date and location of the incident, a description
of the vehicle used (including
license plate), a description of the material
dumped, the quantity dumped and
your mailing address.
Let us clean up our streets together,
holding our community to the highest
standard possible.
