Accelerating an
alarming trend
Dear editor,
Citizens have lost trust
in government as a result of
national scandals featuring
egregious abuses of power and
stunning examples of deception
(Watergate, Pentagon Papers,
Iran-Contra). While a
healthy skepticism is in many
ways desirable, a portion of
the electorate now views current
events through a lens that
distorts reality, dismissing reliable
sources of information
while favoring dubious fringe
outlets and conspiracy theorists.
This alarming trend did
not start with the current administration
but it has certainly
accelerated under this
regime.

Disagreement
is not treason
Dear editor,
Someone recently stated
in a letter to the Bronx Times
Reporter that citizens are
guaranteed the right to free
speech.
To the best of my knowledge,
the POTUS is a citizen.
Citizens are also guaranteed
the freedom to express
an opinion, even a hateful
one, as I have so sadly and angrily
witnessed, on the part
of some congresswomen.
One even referred to the
President using an expletive,
without so much as a whimper
from her cowardly Democrat
colleagues. Or any of the
so called news outlets.
No, disagreement is not
treason. Nor is it racism. The
A beautiful
Bronx Day
Dear editor,
I’m running against Ms.
Ocasio-Cortez in next year’s
Democratic primary. I live in
Queens, but every other Friday
I visit parts of the Bronx
that are in the 14th CD.
Today I got off at the
Parkchester stop on the #6 line
where I greet Herb, who is in
the same spot every time I visit.
I then walk up Westchester Avenue
and have a delicious breakfast
at McDonalds and chat
with Bob. Next stop is the ‘$1
store’ where I greet my favorite
cat lover, Keisha. Then to Castle
Hill Avenue and Mr. Meyers
who is outside the Chase Bank.
We chat and I cross the street
where I fi nd your newspaper.
My last stop is Westchester
Square where I look for Mr.
Lynch who I owe a breakfast.

You should know that more
and more incidents are being
reported of people throwing
water at NYPD police offi cers
while on duty, as if it’s some
sort of game or challenge. We
have all seen news reports
and videos that have gone
viral showing that not only
are our police offi cers being
doused with water, but they
are also being hit with empty
buckets, while onlookers jeer.
This is reprehensible and
I have never seen anything
like it.
It pains me to see how New
York City has become a safe
haven to celebrate disrespect
and humiliate NYPD police
offi cers by drenching them
with water and throwing
empty buckets at them. Our
NYPD offi cers place their
lives on the line every day
and deserve respect, not humiliation.
It is important for you to
know that as an elected offi
cial in NYC Council 18th
District, as the pastor of the
Christian Community Neighborhood
Church, and as the
president of the NY Hispanic
Clergy Organization, I do not
support NYC’s anti-cop climate,
and I have not and will
not turn my back on our police
offi cers.
I urge all our of parents
and caretakers to discourage
this kind of defi ant behavior,
to teach the next generation
that it is not acceptable, and
nothing to laugh at.
If there is any assistance I
can provide or my church can
provide or the NY Hispanic
Clergy Organization can provide
to help strengthen community
relations with the
NYPD, please know that I am
just a phone call away.

This issue’s As Stated addresses
a broad range of city,
state, and national topics, including
the impeachment of
President Trump, the tragic
death of twins left in their father’s
car and the resignation
of Puerto Rico’s corrupt governor.
Congressman Jose Serrano’s
statement in support
of a presidential impeachment
inquiry..... “After much deliberation,
I have reached the
conclusion that the House of
Representatives should open
an impeachment inquiry
against President Trump. The
Mueller Report, in tandem
with director (Robert) Mueller’s
recent testimony before
Congress, indicates that President
Trump committed illegal
acts in an effort to cover up
his campaign’s repeated contacts
with Russia during the
2016 election.
“The actions of the Trump
campaign, in inviting a foreign
power to interfere in our
elections, strikes at the integrity
of our democracy. Moreover,
the efforts to cover up
these actions are an attack on
justice and fairness. It is up to
Congress to act in order to protect
our values and the rule of
law.”
Borough President Ruben
Diaz, Jr. unveils $640,000
support for libraries in latest
capital budget..... “Our libraries
are an important resource
for learning and community
building, and I have always
been proud to support our public
library system through my
capital budget.
“The New York Public Library
provides critical services
for New Yorkers of all
ages, and these allocations
will help our borough’s libraries
grow and thrive.”
Councilman Fernando
Cabrera responds to tragic
deaths of twins left in car.....
(The) tragic deaths of oneyear
old twins left in parked
car at the James J. Peters V.A.
Hospital has left the community
reeling.
“I’m calling on everyone to
support solutions- more education
about the dangers of leaving
kids in cars, the development
of technologies, alarms
built into cars to alert that
a child is there if the door is
closed- even a phone app that
can remind someone that their
child is in the car, educating
people to check parked cars
in their neighborhoods or in
lots where they are shopping
or going to appointments or to
work-to look to see if there are

babies left in cars and to alert
the police.”
A portion of the statement
by Assemblyman Michael
Blake on monitor Barry
Schwartz’s damning report of
NYCHA..... “Barry Schwartz
further confi rmed that NYCHA
is an absolute mess that
requires dramatic and transformational
change to help
Bronxites and New Yorkers
fi nally have quality public
housing. The report is a damning
indictment of an organization
that in the monitor’s own
words, has a ‘history of coverups
and false statements’ and
without ‘a suffi cient focus on
integrity’.
Congressman José Serrano
released the following
statement on the resignation
of Puerto Rico’s governor.....
“Puerto Ricans have spoken
and demanded accountability
and respect from their leaders.
They have spoken out against
mismanagement and corruption,
issues that have no party
lines on the island.
“The events in recent weeks
will only make things harder
at the Federal level going forward,
but I am confi dent that
together, the island can fi nd
ways to overcome these challenges.”
Councilman Fernando
Cabrera statement on sponsoring
the street co-naming
for Stan Lee - iconic American
comic book writer..... “Stan Lee
was a Bronx native who grew
up in my district. He was a creative
genius who co-created
iconic super heroes including
Spider-Man, the X-Men,
the Hulk, Doctor Strange,
Ant-Man, Black Panther and
more.
“Mr. Lee’s amazing talent
brought joy and entertainment
to countless children
and adults and he deserves
to be permanently memorialized
in his home borough, the
Bronx.”
