The Huntington Free Library and
Reading Room announces The East
Bronx History Forum will hold its
145th meeting on Wednesday, December
18 at 7:30 pm. at the City Island
Historical Society and Museum. All
meetings are free and open to the
public. We will meet at City Island
at 190 Fordham Street (left turn from
C.I. Avenue). Call the City Island Museum,

information.
Returning to the East Bronx History
Forum is Patrick Raftery who
has recently published a detailed article
in the Westchester County Historical
Society magazine about the
formation of Bronx County.
Raftery will present his research
in an interesting story of politics
and New York City expansion in his
‘When the Bronx was Westchester’.
Raftery’s presentation focuses on the
events that led to the fi rst section of
Westchester County being acquired
by New York City in 1874 through
1898 with a much later addition of
Rikers Island.
Raftery is a lifelong resident of
Westchester County, and a librarian
at the Westchester County Historical
Society since 2006. Pat graduated
in 2005 from Concordia College
in Bronxville with a B.A. in History
and received his Master of Library
and Information Science from Long
Island University in 2007. He is a volunteer
guide at the Cathedral of St.
John the Divine in Manhattan since
2010.
Pat’s fi rst book, of three volumes
‘The Cemeteries of Westchester
County’ and his second book, ‘The
Cemeteries of the Bronx’, was published
2016.
The Cemeteries of Westchester
County, Volume IV, The Cemeteries
of the Bronx is 418 pages, with over
600 maps, photographs and illustrations.
Raftery’s book will be available
for purchase and signing.
Nice turnout for the Christmas
party at the Bronx VA, due to recent
renovations the place has gotten
smaller but it didn’t deter all from having
a good time. A big thank you to
Chip for arraigning to bring musical
entertainment to the festivities, the
performance by Larry Cooley was outstanding
and Santa’s helper Kathy Columbus
passed out t shirts to the veterans
courtesy of Paddy’s by the Bay.
The Bronx County Christmas party
is scheduled for Sunday, December 15,
2 p.m. at Post 620 in the newly renovated
Doc Paul Hall. The Post Christmas
party will be Friday, December
20, 7 p.m., Ugly Sweater Contest, good
food and good friends ringing in the
holidays.
Happy to say we had a visit from Ed
McCarthy who is up and around after
breaking his leg, extending his hellos
to all. Joe Mondello also stopped in to
say hello after his heart surgery, he is
looking well and feeling good, he asked
me to thank all for the well wishes and
prayers for him while going through
his ordeal. Dues are due, make sure
you are current. That is all for now.
We are stronger as one, let’s work
together.
God bless America.

Much thanks to the faithful crew
showing up for the Silver Beach Memorial
Post’s annual Pearl Harbor Day
rememberance ceremony at the park
and the Bronxonia YC for hosting. One
thought was universal and well stated,
we will always - ‘Remember Pearl Harbor.’
Also, please remember our 3rd Sunday
meeting coming up, regular time,
with our holiday festivities to follow at
American Turners NY. Members may
bring a guest. A big thanks to Max who
will be retiring soon, thanks for the
cooking and hospitality.
And also remember the toy drive is
up and running, never too late for a donation
to help spread holiday cheer.
Best wishes always to those on
the mend. Feel better. You are in our
thoughts and prayers a little extra this
holiday season. Think about our Mid-
Winter Conference in Albany and more
neat ideas to show off Da Bronx. We have
time but need to start planning now.
Until next time: Another ‘remember’
- remember our troops and those in
need this holiday season.
