BY AL D’ANGELO
We are fi ghting a drug epidemic
we can not win given the rules of engagement
that our law enforcement offi
cers have to live by. Former Mayor
Bloomberg had put into place ‘Stop
and Frisk’, a program which would allow
police to stop individuals in high
crime areas, question them and search
them for illegal substances specifi cally
guns and drugs.
It worked. Gun and drug crimes
were greatly reduced, and the inner
cities were safer. Police are aware of
the bad guys in their precincts as are
the residence but catching them in the
act is a different story. ‘Stop and Frisk’
allowed offi cers to stop gang bangers
and search them for guns and drugs
making carrying a gun less attractive.
Unfortunately, this was turned into a
racial issue and the program was discontinued
and Mayor Bloomberg is
apologizing for implementing a program
that saved lives. Now that he’s
contemplating running for President,
he feels this would help him with the
minority vote.
Maybe it’s my ‘white privilege,’ but
gun violence is most prevalent in the
inner cities where young children are
being killed by stray bullets. Sorry but
if ‘Stop and Frisk’ could have saved
one family from the horror of losing a

loved one, it would have been worth it,
just ask the families of the victims. Opponents
of ‘Stop and Frisk cite that minorities
were targeted more often than
the rest of the population. The highest
crime areas are areas where there are
large unemployment numbers and a
poor educational system. That’s our
inner cities and who’s to blame?
The elected offi cials who come
around when it’s time for election and
promise the world and then disappear.
The program saved lives but as the government
does so often instead of fi xing
it, so it doesn’t unfairly target minorities,
just throw it out. How do you get
the guns off the street? Not by going
after the NRA, they’re not doing the
drive by shooting, they’re not your local
gang bangers. ‘Stop and Frisk’ got
the guns off the streets but we needed
the courts to keep them off the streets
and giving them a slap on the wrist is
not the answer.
