New York State Education
Commissioner MaryEllen Elia
announced the list of 2018 – 19
Recognition Schools and six
of the Icahn Charter Schools
have earned the right to be
called a ‘Recognition School.’
This honor places Icahn 1, 2,
3, 4, 5, and 6 amongst the best
schools across New York State
as determined by student performance
and growth on the
New York State exams in ELA,
Mathematics, and Science.
This recognition is the
highest designation a school
can earn in New York State
and six of the seven Icahn
Charter schools have been
given that title of ‘Recognition
Schools.’
To make the NYS Recognition
list, schools needed to
demonstrate high academic
performance, strong student
growth or a combination of
both; and schools that serve
third through eighth- grade
students also had to register
a 95 percent participation rate
or higher in the English language
arts, mathematics, and
science assessments. Given
the criteria to be a Recognition
School it is no surprise
that many became ineligible.
Recognition Schools are in the
top 20% of the almost 2600, k-8
schools statewide.
The NYS Recognition
Award honors school campuses
that possess outstanding
educators, education programs,
and practices that
have led to exceptional student
performance. The Icahn
Schools follow a process of improving
student academic and
social outcomes by guaranteeing
all students have access to
the most effective evidencebased
and accurately implemented
instructional and
social routines and interventions
possible. This process is
often referred to as The Icahn
Wa” or The Icahn formula and
is systemically in place in all
the Icahn schools with the
goal of achieving exceptional
outcomes. The “Icahn Way”
developed by Superintendent
Jeff Litt is a bare-bones
framework that guides best
evidence-based academic and
social practices for improving
academic and social outcomes
for all students.
The Icahn principals and
educators at these high performing
schools have consistently
demonstrated that given
the right tools and treated giftedly,
all students will perform
to their highest academic potential
and be the future we
hope to see.
