New York continues to
make great strides

Cardinal Spellman High
School recognized the contributions
of over 300 student
athletes at the Block “S”
awards ceremony, held at the
school on May 10th. Mr. Daniel
O’Keefe, President and Principal,
welcomed everyone in attendance,
and acknowledged
the hard work and dedication
of the coaches in developing
the athletic talents of the students.
The night featured the presentation
of the Schiazza “S”,
which is given to students
who have received seven, or
more, varsity letters over
their four year high school career.
It is named in honor of
the late Salvatore Schiazza,
who served at the school as
Athletic Director, Moderator
of the Alumni Association,
and member of the Board of
Trustees. This year the Schiazza
“S” was presented to senior
Alyssa Hill
Scholar-Athletes, recognized
for their excellence in
both athletics and academics,
were Mercy Arijesudade and
Walter Ohams. Athletes of
the Year were Alyssa Hill and
Matthew Forti. The following
received the Most Valuable
Player award in their
respective sports: Baseball:

Velocity Track Club New
York continues to make great
strides as they forge toward
the National Championship.
On Saturday, May 25th, we
competed in the VO2Max
Track Club Inc Youth Preseason
Invitational at Dewitt
Clinton and on Sunday,
May 26th we competed at the
Southern Connecticut Youth
Invite at the newly renovated
Bowen Field at James Hillhouse
High School in New Haven
Connecticut. Both meets
had good competition and only
the top three athletes in their
event / gender earned awards.
Medals were hard to obtain
due to weather reaching 90
degrees and the competition
being fi erce at each meet. Velocity
was up for the task, we
brought home a total of 35
medals (13 Gold, 13 Silver & 9
Bronze). Plus, we had many
athletes break their (PR) personal
records.

and Jared Dawson (3 medals).

USATF New York Championship
/ Regional Qualifi er
on Saturday, June 15th &
Sunday, June 16th at Icahn
Stadium Randall’s Island.
