Wave Hill announces renovations to its garden’s front gate
Digital rendering of new front entrance and gate house. Design by CTA Architects PC. Rendering by Andrew Berman Architect.
Starting this month, Wave Hill is
launching a capital renovation to create
a safer and more welcoming arrival
at the garden. A serene oasis that is
open year-round, Wave Hill is located
in Riverdale, and overlooks the Hudson
River and Palisades.
The garden’s front entrance, while
already fully accessible, will be improved
substantially. A new admissions
kiosk will replace the old brick
structure. A pedestrian gate will be
added, creating a fully accessible and
safer entry point that will separate pedestrians
arriving on foot from vehicular
traffi c. Also new will be additional
lighting and enhanced seating at the
pedestrian gate and near the kiosk—
safe and comfortable spots for visitors
to wait for courtesy-cart transportation
to points on the grounds, as well
as for pick-up and drop-off from the
property. When complete—in about
18 months—a new entry path will take
visitors from the gatehouse directly
into Wave Hill’s spectacular gardens
and landscape. The path will be constructed
of new, more accessible materials,
our fi rst implementation of such
materials on pathways in the garden.
The number of parking places will
remain the same and the lot will be
repaved. The view of the parking lot
from outside the property should remain
unchanged.
The New York City Department of
Design and Construction will manage
the project. During construction, the
onsite parking lot will be closed. Ample
offsite parking with regular shuttle
service will be provided, however, as
will shuttle service to and from Metro-
North’s Riverdale station and #1 subway
station at West 242nd Street.
This vital capital renovation, part of
a larger plan to make the visitor’s experience
at Wave Hill better, is made
possible through the support of the
City of New York and private donors.
