What a time for the Bronx to have a
book festival. Nothing compliments the
borough’s newfound renaissance like
the promotion of literacy for not only
children and teens but adults as well.
The Bronx is Reading festival at
Fordham Plaza on Saturday, June 8
from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. will be a diverse
and cultural display of what books,
knowledge and literacy, mean to the
Bronx.
Along with the borough’s own Chief
Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the all day
long festival will pave way for many
Bronxites to share their own stories as
to why reading and writing is viewed
as a treasure that can be discovered by
all.
One of the authors is Josue Caceres,
a businessman by day and author by
night.
In addition to directing his own
fi lms and writing his own books, Caceres
heads the BX Writers.
They are a creative community of
young borough-based literaries that
share their own writing, poetry and
prose.
Of course, most content revolves
around a Bronx upbringing as it’s almost
always a character in the writing.
That’s only one example of what an
impact reading has had on this ever so
growing, smartening borough.

Orchard Beach is the crown
jewel of the Bronx without a
doubt.
The NYC Department of
Parks and Recreation has been
working around the clock to
keep it as such for its average
1.7 million annual visitors.
The sand is cleaned with a
mechanized rake that sifts the
sand and removes debris daily;
once in the morning and again
when the beach closes for the
day.
In addition, Parks has had
staff assigned to continually
clean the sand and boardwalk,
as well as the bathrooms, play-

clean with that initiative, parks
rotates 12 to 15 maintenance
and operations staff assigned
to Orchard Beach during ‘out
of season’ months.
That number jumps from 40
to 45 during the beach season.
This beach season, Orchard
Beach will have three Parks
Enforcement Patrol sergeants
and eight city seasonal aid offi -
cers assigned to the beach.
In addition to beach maintenance,
the project to restore
the historic landmarked pavilion
is moving forward.
Borough President Ruben
Diaz, Jr., Governor Cuomo,
NYS Assembly Speaker Carl
Heastie, and the New York City
Council have each committed
$10 million, in addition to
Mayor de Blasio’ $20 million,
for a total of $60 million toward
the fi rst phase of revitalization.
This past winter, the fi rst
public meetings to gather feedback
for potential programming
of the pavilion were held
before anticipated construction
begins in 2020.
