books because all the book publishers are
here in New York,” according to Sean.
A guidebook first prompted Tricia to look
for apartments in Astoria nine years ago
when she was living in the Upper West Side.
“In this guidebook, it said if you like the
smell of fresh bread wafting from bakeries
and you like seeing produce stands on the
street and a friendly neighborhood, you’re
going to want to move to Astoria,” she said.
Also, Tricia noted, “Halloween in Astoria is
fantastic,” citing it as another reason she loves
the neighborhood.
Lyra’s room is located within their room.
When she was born, Tricia and Sean moved
their bedroom from the other end of the
house, where the office is now, to be closer
to the baby. Lyra’s room twinkles with gleaming
star decals, arranged in the formation of
the night sky surrounding the constellation
of the same name.
A door in the office space leads to Tricia
and Sean’s favorite part of the house: an
expansive backyard that the family uses to
have breakfast on warm days. And it could
be Lyra’s favorite part, too, considering her
most beloved hobby is watering the plants
every morning. (She also likes to water inanimate
objects, Tricia said.)
Though they’re comfortable in their home,
Sean and Tricia predict change to come, especially
when Lyra gets old enough to decide
how she wants her room to look.
“I’m excited for when she has her own ideas.
I’m excited to change it,” Tricia said. But one
thing’s for certain: the apartment will always
be home to their own creations.
