Bad Bi*ch Flapper
What can be more exhilarating than
finding your Halloween costume piece by
piece by thrifting or working in a secondhand
clothing shop? Astoria resident
and former Buffalo Exchange employee
Frankie Crognale found her entire Flapper
costume last year when she worked
at the store off Ditmars.
“The majority of my outfit was very easy
to find. Slip dress, fishnet tights, pointed
loafers and feather boa,” Crognale said.
“On the day of my Halloween party, I
was in search of a flapper headband that
wasn’t just a sequin band to go around
my head. Right before I was about to
leave for the day, my manager called me
up to the buy counter and quietly placed
a beautiful bejeweled flapper headdress
in front of me. Needless to say, I flipped
out only a lot. This was the cherry on top
of my already adorable costume.”
Crognale is all about finding pieces
second-hand and recommends anyone
putting this costume together to do the
same. It's healthy not only for your wallet,
but also for the environment.
“There are always unique pieces at vintage
or thrift stores that you wouldn’t find
in a premade costume kit. This allows you
to add your own flair. You want to wear
your costume, not have your costume
wear you,” Crognale said.
The Astorian got her ‘20s prohibition-era
inspiration from doing the musical “Thoroughly
Modern Millie” when she was in high
school. She said, “This is what sparked my
admiration for the fashions of the prohibition
era. I’ve always had an affinity for quirky
fashion and anything related to disrupting
the norm, and the ‘20s coupled these two
things together to create the epitome of the
true bad-bi*ch era.”
