When the leaves turn crispy and sunset-hued and the
air feels refreshingly chilly, many people see those as the
first few signs of fall (you know, the “pumpkin everything”
folks). Then, there are the people who immediately realize
they need to figure out what costume they’ll don to prowl
the city streets on Halloween. Whether it’s homemade
or store bought, a costume lets you be someone else for
a day and show off your creativity.
We talked to 10 western Queens residents
and Halloween fanatics who walked
us through the process of creating a favorite
costume from past years. One
scoured eBay for the perfect suit, while
another took four to five days making a
DIY Pinhead cap for a “Hellraiser” ensemble.
Prepare to be spooked.
Harley Quinn from
“Batman: Arkham Asylum”
Why dress as a superhero when you can
be a villain? Astoria resident Mallory Campbell
decided to be the Joker’s BFF, Harley
Quinn, for Halloween a few years ago.
“All of my favorite costumes are Batman
related and most of the time, I do something
to make the costume ‘my own.’ That
way, it's set apart from a store-bought
costume,” Campbell said.
Campbell’s creepy ensemble certainly
stands out amongst the hundreds of Harley
Quinn costumes you may find online. She
was also very thrifty and used everyday materials
like duct tape and saran wrap.
“I used saran wrap and red and purple
duct tape to create the corset and boot
covers. I wore an old top, a red bra and a
purple bra overlapping, medical gloves,
fishnets and face paint. I made a nurse's
cap and ID tag from some cardstock I had
laying around and pulled my hair up into
two high, tight pigtails,” Campbell said.
The Batman fan and actress suggests
if you want to recreate the outfit, to wrap
your boots and midsection in saran wrap
before you use the duct tape.
“Additionally, yes, I know that Harley
is blonde. I went the cheap route. I like
the idea of a brunette Harley, though. It
gives me hope that I'll play her someday,”
Campbell said.
