BODY & SOUL 36 | BOROMAG.COM | OCTOBER 2013 The Healing Touch Autumn is upon us, and with it brings a time for reflection, assessment, appreciation, and renewal. It is my favorite season, and one that causes many of us to step back, slow down, and start to formulate plans and changes for the upcoming year. My year has been quite the rollercoaster, and though I have long been a big believer in alternative therapies such as yoga, acupuncture, and meditation to stay ‘self aware’, I have been encouraged by many people in my life to reach out in other directions for some guidance. And several of those suggestions pointed me in the direction of the lovely Luz Milagros Arpino. I must disclose that I know Luz from the physical fitness world, as she is an incredible trainer, teacher, and mentor. I have often left her classes with little bits of life wisdom that play over and over in my head. Because of this “sticking power”, something was telling me I needed to interview her about her therapy work. While there is really no substitute for experiencing her in person, I hope the interview below gives you a little glimpse into some exciting alternative therapies she provides in Western Queens.  What kind of healing modalities are you trained in? Could you provide a little background information on them? I am a Peruvian Pachakuti Mesa Holder, certified in Mayan Electromagnetic Rebalancing, a Level 2 Reiki Practitioner, and a Spirit Drum Medicine holder. I perform Maori Joint work and “Illumination” Journey Dance medicine. How would you describe your training? I began my training in Peruvian Medicine under the tutelage of Olivia Olkowski, a shaman trained in many indigenous healing modalities, including Peruvian, Mayan, Ecuadorian, Japanese energy work, acupuncture, and a Master BTB Feng Shui Consultant. Olivia Olkowski also certified me to deliver Mayan Electromagnetic Rebalancing. This medicine restores the body’s electromagnetic field. Hand placements that correspond to energy fields (chakras) and with intention, the healer channels life force energy to the chakras, making them fire more efficiently. Think of it as getting a Chakra tune-up! Reiki, is a very lovely healing modality. I was attuned and trained in Reiki level 1 & 2 by Kai Altair. Again, I make myself a channel to serve up universal life force energy to transfer light to the client. It’s a sweet, peaceful exchange of universal love. Now that sounds very New Age-y or Star Wars-y, but if you experience it, you truly feel it. Afterwards, people who have low energy, feel energy. People who are wild and can’t sit still, feel sleepy and rest. People who can’t sleep, do, and people with pain, experience painlessness. Some have wept, but anything that comes out, needs to come out. In the words of Shrek, “Better out than in!” One of my favorite ways to do healing work is “Illumination”, my journey dance workshop.
