Celebrate Story BY HAYLEY BRIDGEWATER Though Socrates Sculpture Park is open to the public 365 days a year, the month of May kicks off a host of exciting free annual outdoor programs in the park. I am a huge advocate of outdoor fitness classes and art workshops, and Socrates provides a gorgeous and serene environment to experience such endeavors in the open air, amidst nature, beautiful waterfront views, and inspiring artistic installations. To celebrate the opening of the outdoor program season, come visit Socrates on May 9 for morning yoga or a stroll around the space, and observe the creation of the upcoming installations. Stay for the annual Kite Flight, a community kite-flying day following the first of the Children’s Sculpture Workshop series. Saturday Sculpture Workshops Available to children between the ages of 5 and 13 and their families, themed sculpture-making workshops will be offered from noon to 3 p.m. every Saturday from May 9 through September 26. The workshops are free and will take place in the education area of the park near the entrance. They are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Each workshop will be taught by a different artist, and will expose the children to various materials and subjects. Below are the first workshops available in May. You can check the website for the complete schedule. May 9: Kite Making May 16: Geological Pets May 23: Plantable Seed Sculptures May 30: Protest Signs Yoga Saturdays and Sundays Kripalu yoga is a gentle form of Hatha yoga, combining meditation, physical healing, self-awareness and reflection. Classes are comprised of breathing exercises, stretches, a series of individual poses and an ending relaxation. I have participated in these classes in previous years, and they are enjoyable for all ability levels. Located on the grassy knoll under the trees and adjacent to the waterfront, classes begin May 9 and run through September 27. Classes are taught by popular Kripalu instructors Monique Schubert and Yojaida Estrella and are complimentary to the public. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat or towel. Weather permitting, Saturday Yoga Sessions run from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. to noon. Sunday Yoga Sessions run from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. 38 | BOROMAG.COM | MAY 2015 Tai Chi Sundays Often described as moving meditation, tai chi is a mind and body practice of flowing movements that can reduce stress and improve the functioning of the body’s circulatory, muscular and skeletal systems. Interested in learning and practicing tai chi? Now is your chance. The NYC branch of the Taoist Tai Chi Society of the USA will be offering its annual outdoor beginner practice sessions from 11 a.m. until noon starting May 10 and running through September 27. Classes are free to the public. Just show up on the lawn between the waterfront and the park’s sculpture exhibition space. No need to bring anything. Wear comfortable clothing. Additional programs New programs are being added all the time. For information about low-cost adult art workshops, the LIC Greenmarket Series, specialty events in the park, or the Outdoor Film Series, keep an eye on socratessculpturepark.org The LIC ART BUS is a free (yes, free!) public summer shuttle service connecting the following locations: Socrates Sculpture Park (32-01 Vernon Blvd) The Noguchi Museum (9-01 33rd Rd.) MoMA PS1 (22-25 Jackson Ave.) The Sculpture Center (44-19 Purves St.) Service runs on Saturday and Sunday afternoons from May to September and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. In addition to providing a fantastic and efficient way to hit many of these museums in one weekend, the shuttle provides a much-needed connection from public transit at Court Square to the western Queens waterfront. This initiative, sponsored by Shelly and Donald Rubin, in association with Socrates Sculpture Park, The Noguchi Museum, MoMA PS1, and The Sculpture Center, is a huge gift to all of us eager to explore the growing Queens art scene. www.socratessculpturepark.org 32-01 Vernon Blvd. spring —at— Socrates BO DY & SOUL
