2. Focus on relationships
Even though winter can make you feel isolated, there
are several ways to stay close to loved ones when you
can’t travel far.
“Focusing on relationships is important. What’s unique
about this time is people find they are more in touch
with people who might not live close. With video chats
you can see family and friends who can’t normally make
it to the Christmas party. You can take this time to think
about what relationships are important in your life,” Koblenz
said.
While video meetings are on the rise, there are safe ways
to meet with friends and family in person. Grab your mask
and warmest coat for a walk to Athens Square or Gantry
Plaza State Park with someone you miss connecting with.
3. Take care of yourself
When one feels negatively
impacted by the strains of the
pandemic or the short days, it is
important to practice self-care
by staying active and eating nutrient
rich meals.
“Caring for our bodies is a fundamental
part of mental health. It
is hard for anybody to feel at their
best when their body is unnourished,
tired and inactive,” said psychotherapist
Dr. Gabriela R. Giuggioloni,
MA-LCSW, who has offices
in both Astoria and Manhattan.
If you have trouble accessing
nourishing food, reach out
to Astoria Mutual Aid or The
Connected Chef, two local
orgs that serve the community
through grocery delivery
and Lifeline Groceries.
