heart surgery last month
— when doctors implanted advanced
synthetic organs into
the Mill Basin lawmaker.
“So I am now a cyborg,”
said Maisel, referring to his
new pacemaker.
Paramedics with Jewish
ambulance corp Hatzolah
rushed the 74-year-old legislator
to Maimonides Medical
Center last month with a
cardiac blockage — a condition
that caused his heart to
beat at an abnormal rhythm
— and the legislator praised
fi rst responders for getting
him to the hospital in one
piece.
“I have to give credit to Hatzolah,”
Maisel said. “When
they came to my house, I
wasn’t doing too well.”
During his convalescence,
Maisel missed a few Council
votes, most notably the proposal
to shut down Rikers Island

supported the measure had
he been well enough to vote.
“I was debating with myself
and I had my reservations
on closing it,” Maisel said.
“But I probably would have
voted for it.”
The legislator was released
from rehab on Oct. 30,
and constituents can now fi nd
Maisel working out of his district
offi ce a few hours a day,
where he said his door is always
open– no need to make
an appointment.
Maisel served the area as
assemblyman for seven years
until 2013, when he replaced
former Councilman Lew Fidler
— who tragically passed
away earlier this year — as
the district’s representative
in City Hall.

education

Eric Adams on Thursday
morning awarded $15 million
in capital investments to 58
Brooklyn schools to bolster
their STEAM education, including
major technology upgrades.
Adams presented physical
checks to teachers and principals
from the selected Brooklyn
schools at an emotional
press conference at P.S. 158
Warwick in East New York.
In addition to technology
upgrades, the funds will also
go toward the creation of 11
hydroponic labs, three maker
spaces, a culinary arts space
and a creative lab space. Over
the last six years, BP Adams
has invested $140 million in
Brooklyn schools.
“I’m really excited,” said 16-
year-old Brianna De La Cruz, a
student at the Urban Assembly
School for Criminal Justice.
The Borough Park middle and
high school received $70,000
for a new computer lab.
