JFK Airport 9-11 Memorial
The JFK Airport community celebrated
9-11 at the administration building
at JFK where the impact of the attack
was felt after the destruction at the World
Trade Center. Some of the current JFK
and LaGuardia workers were running for
their lives during the attacks with many
having friends and loved ones lost during
the following minutes. This memorial
service is close to the hearts of the airport
community as 37 officers of the Port
Authority Police and 50 Port Authority
civilians and coworkers died on that day.
Due to the Covid virus, only a small
number of participants were allowed at
the live memorial service but many others
were able to watch via a web stream.
Members of the Port Authority, the
JFK Airport Chamber of Commerce, federal
and local agencies and religious leaders
were on hand to speak or show support
of
this 4th annual tradition at JFK Airport.
Names of the deceases from American
Airlines, United and the Port Authority
were read, the Memorial bell rung to
signify the two moments of the tower collision
and Eva Boyce-Leonard
sang the national anthem that heightened
the spirit of the day.
President of the JFK Chamber of Commerce
Al DePhillips welcomed everyone
and said, “ This year we encourage all of
you present to help us uphold the solemn
obligation to never forget the nearly 3000
men, women and children who perished
as a result of the attacks that took place
19 years ago.”
General Manager JFK Airport
Charles Everett emphasized, “It is good
for the airport community to get together
this morning especially given the circumstances.
On behalf of the Port Authority
and our partners we welcome you
to remembrance of September 11, 2001.”
He continued” This day has become a national
day of service and remembrance
across the US. People come together to
volunteer at local communities to pay
tribute to those lost or injured during the
terrorist attacks including first responders
and now essential workers and the
many patriots who have risen to now defend
our way of life.”
