AIRPORT VOICE, AUGUST 2019 23

which bought Swissport for $2.8
billion) in 2015, had previously held
talks to sell the division to potential
bidders including Brookfield Asset
Management Inc. and Cerberus Capital
Management which bought Worldwide
Flight Services in 2018. HNA has
been on a belt tightening binge after a
buying spree left it with overwhelming
corporate debt.

UPS is launching an international
delivery service for small and medium
size retailers in order to capture
a slice of surging cross-border ecommerce,
forecast to total $1trillion
by 2020, while it has also announced
the launch of a new drone subsidiary
business called Freight Forward
which has applied to the U.S. Federal
Aviation Administration (FAA) for
Part 135 certification to operate commercial
drone flights in the UPS network.
LIVE. The Live Animal certification
was launched in April 2018,
but so far only four companies have
achieved certification: Air Canada
Cargo, the Heathrow Animal Reception
Centre, Biotrans and Goldenway
International Pets & Live Animals.
IATA has teamed up with the Animal
Transport Association (ATA) to
promote adoption of CEIV Live Animals
certification to help raise the
standard of animal transportation.
The two organizations have signed
a Memorandum of Understanding
(MoU). This will see ATA encourage
adoption of CEIV Live Animals
among its members.
ATA and IATA will continue to
work closely to ensure ATA members
are aligned with the CEIV Live Animal
Programme requirements. ATA
is also encouraging its members to
create CEIV Certified communities.
Cathay’s new buy. Pacific Airways
completed the acquisition of
Hong Kong’s budget carrier Hong
Kong Express Airways Ltd., which
was previously owned by HNA Group
Co., Cathay will continue operating
as a standalone airline under current
structure. Cathay has been besieged
by increasing Chinese airlines
and look so increase its market share
from growing mainland Chinese airlines.
Cathay gains additional landing
slots in Hong Kong, home to one of
the world’s busiest international airports.
It also provides Cathay with a
new revenue source as the region’s
growing economies allow more people
to fly, and as Chinese rivals expand
with direct long-haul flights, bypassing
the need to transit in Hong Kong.
Cathay Pacific is the first airline
to introduce blockchain technology
to manage its ULDs in real time via
a mobile app
United way. United Cargo has confirmed
that it will collaborate with
WebCargo by Freightos on the design
and creation of a new online portal
that will provide customers with expanded
on-demand booking, dynamic
pricing and real-time updates on United’s
global cargo network. The portal
will be based on the WebCargo Horizon
software-as-a-service platform.
“Today’s air cargo customers want a
quick and fully-digitized sales experience
with extensive, agile self-service
options,” noted United Cargo president
Jan Krems.

of digital connectivity we want to deliver.
FedEx announced that its ground
vans will be handling freight seven
days a week beginning in January
2020. FedEx said that the move will
help “further serve the fast-growing
e-commerce market. Expanding our
operations to include Sunday residential
deliveries further increases our
ability to meet the demands of e-commerce
shippers and online shoppers,”
said FedEx President and COO Raj
Subramaniam in a statement.
Choice Aviation Services has quietly
set up operations at Newark International
Airport

Silk Way Airlines selects Floridabased
Global Feeder Services (GFS)
as Silk Way Airlines USA’s exclusive
general sales agent in the US, with effect
from today (August 1, 2019).
GFS president Arthur Ilyayev
said: “With the appointment of GFS,
our customers will have more options
for shipments destined for the Middle
East and Central Asia, and we will
have new routes and direct access to
Silk Way Airlines USA’s 43 flying destinations,
while our new arrangement
offers lower prices and faster transits
to the destinations we already serve.
Shipping Increase. The USPS has
applied for a price increase of 4.9%,
while both FedEx and UPS recently
announced 5% price hikes according
to new media. Both FedEx and UPS
use the USPS for final delivery to the
customer’s door in some contexts. It
is suggested that the net impact of a
USPS price increase would be positive
for both companies. Seems that
FedEx may increase its fees to compensate
for the loss of Amazon related
deliveries and potential China tariff
issues.
