The only thing reviewed is mitigation
and no response for years. I
am insulted that the port treating
us this way. What the heck can we
do. Need a defi nitive response, “
he demanded. His comments were
echoed by Chair Barbara Brown
and other members who said the
NYCAR will pursue. “We will to the
top”, another said.
Hoppenhauer’s emotional remarks
drew an explanation from
Director of Airports Hersh Parekh
saying he understands the frustration
and Port is endeavoring to have
an updated “we have something
to share.” Parekh referred to the
pause on the JFK Redevelopment
which he alluded is tied to whatever
decisions are mad eon the studies
not yet resolved.
Operations sub-committee
Chair Gloria Boyce-Charles picked
up on this and commented on the resumption
of life after the pandemic.
She said that it is n ow a time to refl
ect on how things can be better.
Saying that there are too many
planes in the sky and they should
be relative to people on the ground.
With less planes fl ying, there is less
noise, less health concerns, and a
better quality of life. Environmental
Oversight sub-committee hair
Dan Mundy commented on this saying
that the airlines think there is
an infi nite amount of airspace but
there isn’t according to all studies
of density. He said, “ Now is the
time to consider passing a motion
to cap the number of planes at JFK
and LaGuardia and use alternative
airports such as Stewart MacArthur
and Republic, The idea of JFK
being centric is a problem.”
FAA representatives Veda Simmons
and Lisa Burrows Offi cer for
the Eastern Region made a video
presentation at the meeting describing
how may factors affect FAA decisions
in the crowded metro NY
airspace. Barbara Brown Barbara
commented on the FAA aircraft
noise and research efforts saying
the comment period is still open.
Simmons said other FAA people
would attend and speak on the matter
so more members are informed
to comment.
