led the New York Ganesh Temple
in F lushing, the f irst of f icial
Hindu temple in North
America, for over a
decade. Founded in
1977, the temple
attracts devotees
from beyond the
tristate area.
In this role,

oversees 12

and helps them
preserve the
Hindu traditions.
The temple
brings in priests
from multiple cities,
including Bengaluru, Hyderabad
and Vaiyanaat ’s home city of
Chennai, who have undergone
rigorous education and live
alongside the elders.
Vaidynaat sees that there is
an increased need to the ancient
Hindu traditions that the New
York Ganesh Temple upholds,
especial ly among the younger
generation who deal with
confusion about what path

that there is
fear among the

community in regards
to the reports of hate crimes
and discrimination in America.
However, Vaidyanaat says that
New York provides a ‘global
vi l lage’ where those who practice
Hinduism – which is not a religious
practice and doesn’t have
stringent rules – can lead their
own lives.

believes that if you
properly guide the
young people and
get them engaged,
it will be easy
for the younger
generation to
incorporate the
Hindu practices
into their lives.
