Stanner hoops star now UNC-bound
Molloy standout Cole Anthony commits to playing for the Tar Heels this fall
BY STEPHEN LEPORE
A former Archbishop
Molloy standout is trading
Briarwood for Chapel Hill.
Cole Anthony, who
attended the Oak Hill
Academy this past school
year after spending his early
high school days at Molloy, is
committing to play basketball
at the University of North
Carolina. Anthony was
ranked by ESPN as the second
best prospect in his class
and was the best remaining
unsigned prospect for the
fall. The young man kept his
decision close to the vest,
but reports from 247Sports
suggest he chose the Tar
Heels over the likes of Duke
and Notre Dame. The son
of former NBA player Greg
Anthony, Cole announced
his decision on live television
Tuesday morning.
“We really pushed this
decision back a lot,” Anthony
said on ESPN. “We really just
kept looking at all our schools,
and I just always ended up
winding up going back to
Carolina. It felt like a family
to me. I love Coach Roy
Williams, Coach Hubert
Davis. If it was up to me, I’d
be on campus tomorrow.”
The news has been noticed
at his old stomping grounds,
as Archbishop Molloy offers
nothing but good thoughts
for the teenager. “We are
happy for him and UNC,”
said Molloy Athletic Director
Cole Anthony, seen in this 2017 picture, became a star for the
Archbishop Molloy High School men’s hoops team. He’s now heading
to Tar Heel country. Photo by Robert Cole
Mike McCleary. “Cole and his
parents were very thoughtful
in their selection process. We
wish him well.”
Anthony heads to UNC
with many of the credentials
of a top notch college
basketball prospect. He
earned MVP honors at both
the McDonald’s All American
Game and Jordan Brand
Classic, in addition to leading
USA Basketball to a win at
the Nike Hoop Summit.
What’s next for this
exciting young prospect?
Perhaps we can look to the
past. In a 2017 interview with
CNG, Anthony felt that the
sky was the limit.
“I want to go play in college
and then proceed to go to the
NBA and be the best player,”
he said. “I’m going to work as
hard as I can to achieve that
goal.”
