MORNING & AFTERNOON SHIFTS ARE NOW AVAILABLE. SALARY + COMMISSION 5 Tips to Get the Most from Your Medicare Benefits Medicare’s annual open enrollment period is now underway through December 7. If you are eligible for Medicare, this is the time to enroll or to change plans. To help you learn how to save money and get more benefits, here are Amida Care’s top five tips for making the most of Medicare. 1) Get Started as Soon as Possible You should receive a Medicare card or letter from the U.S. government three months before your 65th birthday. If you receive your card, you can start using it on the effective date shown. If you receive a letter of eligibility, make an appointment as soon as possible to fill out an application; apply online; or call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633- 4227) (TTY 1-877-486-2048). Apply within the three months before your birthday so your Medicare coverage starts at the earliest possible date: the first day of the month of your 65th birthday. If you wait until after you turn 65, you may miss months of coverage and risk late enrollment penalties! 2) Look for Ways to Improve Your Coverage Original Medicare has out-of-pocket costs that really add up: premiums, deductibles, co-pays, and co-insurance. You will also not be covered for supplemental benefits such as dental services, regular eyewear services, and routine hearing exams or aids. Here are ways you can improve your coverage: • Join a Medicare Advantage Plan like Amida Care • Add a Medicare Supplemental Plan • Keep your current union or employer coverage • Continue to use your Veteran’s Administration (VA) benefits • Apply for financial assistance programs 3) Inquire About Financial Assistance Luckily, many Medicare beneficiaries qualify for assistance that helps with out-of-pocket costs. There is even a program that pays for supplemental benefits such as dental services and eyewear. But you have to apply! Here are programs that assist with costs and additional benefits: • Medicaid/Medicare Savings Program – Call Medicaid Helpline, 1-888-692-6116 • Low Income Subsidy (also known as “Extra Help”) – Call the Social Security Administration, 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) • Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage (EPIC) – Call EPIC, 1-800-332-3742 (TTY 1-800-290-9138) • HIV Uninsured Insurance Programs (ADAP) – Call AIDS Institute, 1-800-542-2437 (TTY 1-800-421-1220) 4) Know Your Medicare Rights You have rights and protections with both Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage Plans from private insurers. These rights protect you when you get health care, guarantee access to the health care services you are entitled to, protect against unethical practices, and safeguard your privacy. For more information, contact Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) (TTY 1-877-486- 2048) or visit medicare.gov. 5) Know Where to Get the Information You Need • To enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan: • all 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) (TTY 1-877-486-2048) or visit medicare.gov/ find-a-plan • Contact a private insurance plan such as Amida Care, a New York City not-for-profit health plan • For information on: • No-cost personalized counseling on Medicare options and financial assistance programs • Call the State Health Information Program (SHIP), 1-212-602-4180 • Medicaid/Medicare Savings Programs • Call the Medicaid Helpline, 1-888-692-6116 • Medicare benefits and services • Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) (TTY 1-877-486-2048) 24 hours a day, seven days a week, or visit medicare.gov • Social Security, Low Income Subsidy, changing Medicare coverage, or other issues • Call the Social Security Administration, 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) • Veterans Administration (VA) coverage • Call the VA, 1-800-827-1000 (TDD 1-800-829-4833) Amida Care’s Medicare Product Specialists are happy to answer your questions about Medicare and help you understand how to make the most of your benefits.
