Local HS Senior Awarded US Congressional Gold Medal Congratulations to Garden School senior, Julia M., for being awarded the U.S. Congressional Gold Medal Youth Award in June! The Congressional Award, handed out by Congressman Crowley this year (pictured above), is given to exceptional young American students who meet goals in community service, personal development, physical fitness, plus exploration and expedition. Gold medal recipients require a minimum of 400 hours documented community volunteer service and Julia logged more than 550! Along with earning Academic Honors last year and serving as co-captain of the varsity volleyball and basketball teams and playing varsity tennis, the long list below of Julia’s community service responsibilities demonstrates that Julia is a great example of Garden’s Mission of “social involvement” in action and we could not be more proud of her! The Congressional Award is the United States Congress’ award for young Americans. It is non-partisan, voluntary, and non-competitive. The program is open to all 14- to 23-yearolds; young people may register when they turn 13 1/2 years old and must complete their activities before their 24th birthday. Participants earn Bronze, Silver and Gold Congressional Award Certificates and Bronze, Silver and Gold Congressional Award Medals. Each level involves setting goals in four program areas; Volunteer Public Service, Personal Development, Physical Fitness, and Expedition/ Exploration. Earning the Award is a fun and interesting way to get more involved in something you already enjoy or something you’d like to try for the first time. You move at your own pace – on your own or with your friends. This is not an award for past accomplishments. Instead, you are honored for achieving your own challenging goals. Regardless of your situation, you can earn the Congressional Award. The Congressional Award has no minimum grade point average requirements. It accommodates young people with special needs or disabilities who are willing to take the challenge.
