O en it is claimed that commercialization has transformed the meaning of the Holidays into a shopping experience. is view is based upon the “what’s in it for me” mentality. is opinion relies upon sel sh preoccupation with material desires rejecting the gi s of love and devotion the holidays are founded upon. Children from around the world have the right to believe in compassion and love of their elders, family members and by a society that allegedly cherishes them. Yet daily we view with detachment massive su ering by children and their families a icted by poverty, con ict and social injustice. e impact of their a iction causes us to protect ourselves by viewing without seeing their plight. Toys for Tots were founded by the United States Marine Corps in the hope of alleviating some of the anguish children su er particularly during the Holidays. Yearly thousands of toys and funds are collected by the Corps which is happily handed out to those who otherwise would have nothing. During the Holidays a child without a toy is a child without hope! St. Michael’s has hosted a drive for Toys for the past three years. anks to the gracious commitment by members of our community thousands of toys and thousands of dollars have been raised. On Saturday, December 13th at 2PM members of the USMC will again be present at St. Michael’s to collect donations while proudly taking photos with the children who seem drawn to them. JD Miller will provide holiday songs that will enhance the season’s warmth and promise. St. Michael’s once again extends an invitation to all to attend and participate. We believe by serving others we serve a greater purpose which de ne the Holidays. Please join us. Ed Horn SHOPPERS CELEBRATE THE MAGIC OF THE HOLIDAY SEASON Countdown to Light the Enchanted Tree at Atlas Park What: Shoppers are invited to enjoy an evening of pure delight as Atlas Park officially brings in the holiday season with its annual Tree Lighting Ceremony. The first 500 shoppers will receive a magic wand to help light our enchanted tree with the help of Santa. They’ll be live music, face painters, and free giveaways for the kids. Plus, children will be able to enjoy milk and cookies with Santa following the tree lighting.
