OFF ANN MARIE SCHLOSSER VOLUNTEER RIDGEWOOD OLDER ADULT CENTER PERSONAL BACKGROUND Ann Marie Schlosser was born and raised in Flushing. She comes from a large home, being one of eight children. She graduated from Dominican Commercial High School. She is currently married and resides in Ridgewood. P R O F E S S I O N A L BACKGROUND Scholsser later went on to attend FIT in 1980, where she majored in fashion merchandizing and would soon discover her passion for the craft of jewelry making. She took several courses in jewelry making where she learned specialized techniques such as making wax molds. Discovering jewelry making at a later point in her life gave her an appreciation for the fi ne skill it requires. “Jewelry is a special craft that many start young with, but I was happy to learn later in my life.” She continued to fuel her passion for jewelry making by working in jewelry stores and thrift stores, and selling jewelry in the New York Public Library Giftshop and department stores in Manhattan. Scholsser currently teaches a weekly jewelry making class at the Ridgewood Older Adults Center, sharing the skills she’s built over the years with residents there. MOTIVATION TO CONTRIBUTE TO COMMUNITY Scholsser recognizes how senior citizens struggle with disabilities in their late age and hopes bringing them this class will encourage them and be a positive part of their day. Having a father who suffered from degeneration, she can identify with the struggles many of the residents face daily. Some of them struggle with shaky hands or poor eyesight, meaning jewelry making can be challenging for them. She is able to work closely with residents, guiding them to make their designs and art and even stepping in when their disabilities prevent them from fi nishing their designs. Her class provides a therapeutic escape in the day for some of them, taking their minds off their ailments and doctors visits. BIGGEST CHALLENGE When Scholsser began the class two years ago, she worked with some residents who were down about their situations, making it a challenge to fi nd a way to connect with them. As the class progressed, she watched their attitudes transform. “I try to fi nd a way to accommodate them the best I know how. If someone wants a particular color bead that we don’t have, I’ll take a trip into Manhattan to get it for them.” Now she has developed close bonds with those who struggled to open up to her in the beginning. “Even when I’m running a few minutes late, I’ll arrive to them waiting at the table ready and looking for me.” GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT Getting the class up and running was a great success for Scholsser. The class receives some supplies from the center but relies heavily on bead donations from people in the community. With enough donations, Scholsser is able to teach the class how to make earrings, bracelets and necklaces. As the class expands, she is hoping to begin new projects. The participants are currently working on earrings, necklaces and bracelets to sell at their upcoming jewelry sale on Dec. 5 at the center.
