Jeannick Guzman, College Point, is doing the best she can to make the senior year the best for her fellow students. Some of her tasks are to create great dances, trips, volunteer a c t i v i - ties, school events, an astounding yearbook, senior T-shirts or hoodies, and prom. Through the Leadership Class, Guzman has participated in the school blood drive, cleanups at Cunningham Park, collecting money for UNICEF and March for Babies, and collecting canned goods for the needy. Through her school institute, Teachers for Tomorrow, she was a teaching assistant, where she taught Living Environment to freshmen, and a summer intern. She is also a member of a MOUREE KHAN Student organization president of Hillcrest High School is a very active student Mouree Khan, a Queens Village resident and member of the Public Service and Law Small Learning Community (SLC) at Hillcrest High School, is the student organization president. She and senior advisor, Haydee Racinos, work very closely together. Khan has made astounding several accomplishments and contributions to her community. She has participated in several activities such as the mock trial competition at New York University and Columbia University, the AIDS and March of Dimes Walk, Police Explorers Committee with the NYPD, the “It’s My Park Day at Cunningham Park,” her school’s track team, and the school blood drive. Her contributions include writing articles for her school’s newspaper called The Highlighter, running an ESL program at P.S. 86, establishing a book a nonprofi t organization, Power, which empowers girls through sports and college readiness. Guzman interned at an incubator space in Long Island City called Mi Kitchen estu Kitchen where she learned how businesses function. She is a member of the school Book Club and yearbook committee, volunteers at freshman orientation prior to the commencement of school, and through ARISTA and Junior Achievement has taught e l eme n t a r y school students fi nance, c o m m u n i t y activities and family living. Academically, Guzman has completed Advanced Placement classes in world history and Spanish, as well as College Now courses in biology and history at York College as part of the CUNY system. Guzman has her eyes particularly on Penn State University or SUNY Buffalo as college options post graduation. A philosophy she believes is, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams,” a quote by Eleanor Roosevelt. club, volunteering at the Margret Teitz Nursing Home and City Harvest canned food drive, and mentoring students for the College Readiness Club called “Scholars on Point,” as well as struggling Hillcrest freshman. On an academic level, Khan took Advances Placement level courses in history and literature, as well as College Now courses in health professionals and speech communications. Kahn has a 100 percent attendance record at Hillcrest High School and the highest GPA in her SLC. Although her future plans are not fi nalized, Kahn is “actively participating in everything to obtain a better sense of the world outside of high school and searching for the perfect career path.” Some of the schools she is examining are Stonybrook University and Northeastern University. A philosophy of life that Mouree Khan follows is “Everyone is a ‘trophy in the making’ and can do wonders for the world. As long as they have the encouragement they need, anyone can succeed.” David Morrison is the principal of Hillcrest High School. JACON MORENCY Board president of the Scholars of Martin Van Buren High School The Scholars is a unique organization at Martin Van Buren High School composed of students with outstanding academic grades devoted to community service inside and outside of the school. Last year, Jason Morency was a Scholars junior offi cer and today he holds the board president title. Working closely with advisor Pamela Fried, he coordinates tutoring activities between Scholars and peers or local elementary schools. Last summer, he spent several days volunteering for his school by helping incoming freshmen acclimate to their new environment. Morency coordinates some of the Scholar and ARISTA activities such as the Celebration Day festivities, when the community is invited to participate in activities and games at the school, and the Breast Cancer Walk. He also volunteers at parent-teacher evenings, and tutors and teaches students at P.S 18 and P.S. 33 through Junior Achievements. For years, Morency has also performed as part of the school orchestra or Drumline in every festival the school has produced. Jason is president of the Music Honor Society or TRI-M, Offi cer of the debate team, member of the MVB Drumline, string section leader of the school orchestra. He is also co-chief intern in the MVB Special Programs, a group supervised by Sanjay Patel, fi nding special programs and opportunities for students to volunteer or take special courses. He is involved with Patient Care Technician Program (PCT), which is a medical certificate course that teaches students how to use an EKG machine, perform CPR and fi rst aid, and learn medical terms. Academically, Morency has take Advanced Placement courses in world history, U.S history, English, calculus, Spanish, English literature and biology. He’s completed a government course from Syracuse University and algebra 2, public speaking and health profession at Queensborough Community College. After high school, he plans to attend Hunter College through the Macaulay Honors College, Columbia University or Sophie Davis Medical School. He aspires to work in the medical fi eld as a registered nurse or a nurse practitioner and assist his church and high school. He hopes to convince Principal Sam Sochet to construct an observatory in the school.
