Attorneys & Counselors at Law 1-866-WAS-HURT (866) 927-4878 718.738.9800 PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND: As a flute, baritone and tenor sax player, she has performed in New York at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola (Lincoln Center), Trumpet’s, Birdland, Danny’s Skylite Room, Iridium, Flushing Town Hall and JVC Jazz Festival. She played with the first all-female Latin band, Latin Fever, at Madison Square Garden alongside Tito Puente. She now regularly tours Europe in countries such as Switzerland, Italy and the UK. MOTIVATION TO CONTRIBUTE TO COMMUNITY: Sudhalter has pioneered several jazz series in her home borough of Queens such as “Athens Square Park Jazz Mondays,” the Astoria/LIC Waterfront Jazz Festival and Sunset Jazz Concerts at Ralph DeMarco Park. She founded the Astoria Big Band, which has received more than 20 development and performance grants, played at Mary Lou Williams Festival and the Kennedy Center, and presents many concerts of works by women composers. “This is where I live. People have always shown great interest in our jazz concerts and a hunger to be exposed to more,” Sudhalter said. “I’ve loved hitting the parks where we can play for so many different ethnic groups.” BIGGEST CHALLENGE: Throughout Sudhalter’s musical life, her biggest challenge has been ignoring the negativity and internal voices “that tell you, you can’t,” she said. “My biggest challenge has been to stay focused on the positive and ignore and push out the internal voices that tell us, ‘Give up. It’s not worth it. You don’t have the resources. They might not like you. You don’t have the talent,’ or any other negative message that one may be experiencing.” BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: Sudhalter has been awarded and recognized for a plethora of accomplishments. Sudhalter received special honors including a citation by La Guardia College Performing Arts Center for outstanding contributions to the Queens Jazz Community (2002). In 2003, she received the Reverend John Garcia Gensel Award from Manhattan Country School for distinguished service to jazz. She was also recently appointed head of Flushing Town Hall’s monthly Jazz Jam sessions for this entire academic year, through June 2017. Her greatest achievement thus far was founding the Astoria Big Band. “We are still going strong,” Sudhalter said.
