ISABELLA Isabella Taxilaga was the grand prize winner of the Be Kind People Project’s nationals student writing contest. My name is Isabella and I am in the second grade at P.S. 122 in Astoria. My favorite things to do are reading, writing and drawing. I love to write poems, songs and stories about my family and what I feel. I really love doing this job and I’m very happy and proud to write for everybody. HALLOWEEN FUN BY ISABELLA TAXILAGA Halloween is one of my favorite holidays of the whole year. This is the time when you can dress up and be anything you can imagine. The other part that makes Halloween so good is all the candy that you can get. Even if this is a fun holiday I want you to be safe. I have some ideas and tips of how you can stay safe: -If you are under 15 years old, do not go trick-ortreating alone. -If you have an allergy, don’t eat any candy unless your parents check it. (This is a good idea even if you don’t have an allergy.) -Trick-or-treating in the daytime can be fun too. This way you can get fi rst pick of all the good candy and be safe. -If you have a mask on with your costume only put it on when you reach a house, or else you may not be able to see where you are walking. -Never, never go into a stranger’s house without your parents. The most important part of Halloween is that you have a lot of fun. I really hope you enjoy trick-ortreating. This year I am going to be Elsa from “Frozen,” who will you be? The Queens Courier/El Correo hosts fi rst Latino Stars event BY THE QUEENS COURIER STAFF Some of the best of New York’s Latino community came out to Queens on the evening of Oct. 16 to celebrate the fi rst Latino Stars Awards & Networking Event, which honored prominent Latino New Yorkers. “We’ve contributed more than just food and music, right?” City Council Speaker Melissa Mark- Viverito said during the opening ceremony as hundreds of guests took their seats. “We’ve contributed to science, politics and so much more.” The event, held at Terrace on the Park in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, began at 6 p.m. with a business expo and networking opportunities. It was followed by dinner and an awards ceremony, and concluded with a charity raffl e benefi ting the nonprofi t organization Life’s WORC and Family Center for Autism, helping children and adults with disabilities. Courier publisher and CEO Victoria Schneps hosted the event alongside two emcees from Fox 5, traffi c reporter Ines Rosales and meteorologist Mike Woods. She welcomed Borough President Melinda Katz. “It’s great to see the Latino community united,” said Thatiana Diaz, who held the title of Miss Dominican Republic U.S. 2013. “When I see all of these great people together in one place it inspires me to make a difference and be like them.” Among those who were honored were Ruben Diaz Jr., the Bronx borough president; Geraldo Rivera, a prominent author, attorney and TV anchor; Diana Reyna, deputy borough president of Brooklyn; state Senator Jose Peralta; and City Council member Julissa Ferraras. Along with Mariachi bands and traditional Spanish dance performances, the event also featured the singing group, Voz a Voz. The Latin Billboard and Latin Grammy nominee artists began their musical journey in the Dominican Republic in 2005. They released their first album “En Presencia del Futuro” under the record label UBO and later moved to New York City. In 2007, the group went on a nationwide tour of the U.S. and were nominated in the Latin Billboard awards for Best Pop Album and Group/ Duo of the Year. They were also later nominated in the Latin Grammy awards.
